Deja Voodoo

Nun, die Frage ist berechtigt, wohin der Kurs der Band nach dem Tod des Bassisten Allen Woody gehen würde, doch Worcaholic Warren Haynes nahm die Fäden in die Hand, und mit den neuen Leuten Danny Louis (mit klassischen Rhodes und B-3 Sounds) und Andy Hess am Bass ist die Band keineswegs angeschlagen. Im Gegenteil: kräftiger Southern Blues Rock wird geboten, bei "Perfect Shelter" kommt gar die Heavy Rock-Seite zur Geltung. Entgegen den früheren Album kommen mehr Balladen zum Zuge, diese langsamen Nummern allerdings sind stark und wachsen von Mal zu Mal. Die eigentliche Überraschung ist das 11-minütige "Silent Scream" mit zwei Jam-Passagen, und das letzte Stück auf dem "offiziellen" Album ist definitiv Blues Rock für eine neue Welt.

Die europäische Version von "Deja Voodoo" enthält eine 2. CD mit 5 bisher unveröffentlichten Live-Stücken und 30-40 Minuten weiterer großartiger Gov't Mule-Musik!

The death of Allen Woody could have been the end of Gov't Mule. It took some soul searching for Warren Haynes before he decided "the Mule" would continue. After two studio albums and a live album with a revolving cast of bass players, the transformation is complete. The addition of Danny Louis on keys and a permanent bass player Andy Hess has signaled the beginning of a new era. The band's heavy rock side is best found here in the chunky riffs and sleazy grooves of "Perfect Shelter," the awesomely titled "Slackjaw Jezebel," and "Mr. Man." This album has a larger supply of ballads than the band's previous works, but the slow numbers are strong and dramatic slow-burners. The big surprise here is the 11-minute "Silent Scream" which has two extended jam passages. As can be seen in the title of the final track, this is surely blues rock for a new world.
