Lakewest Sessions

In the Fall of 1995, while I was preparing to make my first solo record, I was asked by the label for some demo recordings of the songs I was considering for the upcoming album. We didn't want to spend a lot of time or money on these versions, just get in the studio, lay down the songs live and get out. So I booked a weekend with my Friend Jack Gauthier at Lakewest Recording and over the course of a few days we recorded and mixed the collection you hold now. In most cases these were songs that the band had never heard before. I'd do a quick run through, we'd make some on the spot arrangement decisions and we'd roll the tape. It was a very fast and exciting way to record and one that I enjoyed thoroughly. Of course in order to record in this manner it's best to surround yourself with very talented and accomplished musicians, and I was lucky at the time to be working with some great ones.
I remember being surprised by this recording. It had a freshness and energy that immediately appealed to me, and a unique vibe that felt special to me somehow; qualities that perhaps I didn't expect from those whirlwind sessions. I think I even joked with Jack and the band that "well that was easy, my record's done, thanks boys." Of course my record wasn't "done," but this recording did carve out it's own niche within my catalog, albeit an underground one. It quickly became popular with the many friends and colleagues who were given copies and has remained a favorite through the years. Every now and then someone would remind me of it telling me how they threw it in the CD player the other day and it still sounded cool and I'd think "man, someday I have to do something with that…." Which brings us here.
Fans of my music will recognize a number of the songs in this collection. Some became part of the Favorite Waste of Time album, a couple went on to become Hardpan songs, some showed up on EP's or live recordings and some were never heard from again, at least not until now. Working on this release has brought back a lot of great memories and has reacquainted me with some songs that I haven't thought about much for quite some time. The song "You and I" for example is one that I've always really liked but was never able to find a home for on a record. It seems to me now to be an unintentional but obvious and nice bookend to the song "You & Me" from my most recent record Broken. I hear "Dangerous Love" and I remember that I wrote it just after returning from my first tour in Ireland earlier that Spring. I was so inspired by the local musicians I'd met and the traditional music they played that I tried my best to write something in that vein. "Julia" was another "post Ireland" song. I was also reminded that a few of these songs were "works in progress" at the time, so you may notice some mumbled lyrics here and there and perhaps some questionable word choices….. I've decided to just let those be, and not exclude them from the group. In fact, other than having the recording mastered, nothing has been changed since we threw this collection together so quickly all those years ago.
I'm very glad to finally be able to share this recording with a wider audience, and I thank my friend Edgar Heckmann at Blue Rose Records for helping to make it possible. I sincerely hope you enjoy listening. Thanks for supporting the music!

Not only new Blue Rose releases will be covered but also previously released CDs will be available on vinyl. Each item of these custom LPs is a unique copy, done by request only and the name of the customer will appear on the LP label. Heavy 180g vinyl will be used, since the running times are between 50 and 60 minutes these days most of the available vinyl editions will be 2-LP sets.

At the shows of his 2009 German tour TODD THIBAUD offered an album which is not available at any stores: Lakewest Sessions features early versions of his first album Favorite Waste Of Time plus songs which didn't make it on any other Todd Thibaud record. Todd explains how this record came together:
