Northern Shore

Northern Shore heißt das brandneue Album in der Besetzung Andy Maize (Lead Vocals), Josh Finlayson (Guitars, Piano, Lead Vocals), Michael Johnston (Keyboards), Ron Macey (Bass) und Noel Webb (Drums, Piano, Organ). Es handelt sich um 15 abwechslungsreiche, ambitionierte bis aufregende Titel, die in drei separaten Etappen unter verschiedenen Studio/Aufnahmebedingungen entstanden sind. Die Skydiggers betreten dabei zum Teil klangliches Neuland mit dem Einbau von Samples und programmierten Beats, finden aber immer wieder zurück zum analog-melodischen Folk Pop/Country Rock, der ihnen schon vor Jahren den Titel als "Jayhawks der CanAmericana-Szene" eingebracht hat. Ein Teil des Materials wurde in Josh Finlayson's Heimstudio zunächst ganz spartanisch als Guitar/Vocal/Drum Machine Basic Tracks aufgenommen und dann nach und nach mit den anderen Instrumenten, mit Samples und Loops angereichert. Eine zweite Portion wurde im Woodshed Studio von Blue Rodeo aus dem Stand live und ohne doppelten Boden aufgenommen und der dritte Teil war dann eher klassisches Recording. Die Arrangements hat man exakt konzipiert und danach im Studio von Tragically Hip (The Bathouse) sorgfältig eingespielt und zusammengefügt. Am Ende war es eine große Leistung von Soundmann/Produzent Saam Hashemi, im Kern so verschiedene Recordings zu einem flüssig klingenden Album zu verarbeiten.

Die stilistische Vielfalt auf Northern Shore reicht von der melodramatischen Klavierballade 'Liar, Liar' zum aufgefrischten Neo Honky Tonk auf Mickey Newbury's Klassiker 'Why You Been Gone So Long', vom sperrigen, mit heftigen Beats durchzogenen 'Fire Engine (Red Explosion)' zum stimmungsvollen 'Waves' mit Akkordion von Cowboy Junkies-Sideman Jaro Czerwinec, vom luftigen, "maschinellen" Lindsey Buckingham-Pop von 'The Herd', in dem Maize die ganze Klasse seiner Stimme ausspielt, zu 'Deep Water (31 Mile Lake)', einer Co-Komposition von Finlayson mit Tom Wilson von Blackie & The Rodeo Kings und exklusiv gesungen von Jessy Bell Smith. 'Barely Made It Through' lässt die Herzen alter Skydiggers-Fans höher hüpfen: Kein Geringerer als Ex-Mitgründer Peter Cash kehrt für diese Cash Brothers-Nummer noch ein Mal zurück in die vorderste Reihe als Gitarrist und Leadsänger! Überhaupt mischen die Cash's indirekt wieder kräftig mit, Andy Maize singt Peter's Ballade 'Without Me' und Andrew, der ja mittlerweile als Abgeordneter im kanadischen Parlament sitzt, bringt hier zwei weitere seiner Songs unter. Besonders 'You've Been Gone So Long' klingt in diesem locker countryfizierten, jingly-jangly Arrangement wie eine Adaption aus dem Byrds-Katalog. Auf 'You'll Come Around' kommen sie ihren Freunden von Blue Rodeo sehr nahe und der Titelsong 'Northern Shore' ist schlichtweg grandioses, unter die Haut gehendes Andy Maize-Vokaldrama, wird nur vom Klavier begleitet.

Das Fazit kann nur begeistert ausfallen. Eine Band, die schon so lange im Geschäft ist und Labelpleiten, zu häufige Personalwechsel, einen Abgang auf höchster Ebene und vielleicht die ein oder andere falsche Entscheidung zu verarbeiten hatte, meldet sich eindrucksvoll zurück. Northern Shore ist ein kraftvolles, zeitgemäßes Werk und eine große Bereicherug für die CanAmericana-Gemeinde geworden!

Northern Shore is the title of the current album by Andy Maize (lead vocals), Josh Finlayson (guitars, piano, lead vocals), Michael Johnston (keyboards), Ron Macey (bass) and Noel Webb (drums, piano, organ). It features 15 versatile, ambitious and exciting tracks, recorded in three sessions in various locations, using different recording techniques. The Skydiggers are exploring new territory with the use of samples and pre-programmed beats but always find their way back to the analog, melodious folk pop/country rock sound that earned them the moniker "the Jayhawks of CanAmericana". Part of the material was recorded at Josh Finlayson's home studio with a Spartan approach of guitar/vocal/drum machine basic tracks that were embellished with various instruments, samples and loops. A second session took place at Blue Rodeo's Woodshed Studio, all live without a safety net and part three of the album was recorded in a less experimental manner. Arrangements were all worked out and carefully orchestrated in Tragically Hip's studio The Bathouse. It is no small feat of engineer/producer Saam Hashemi to make a beautifully cohesive album out of three such different recording sessions.

Northern Shore ranges stylistically from the melodramatic piano ballad of "Liar, Liar" to a fresh neo-honky tonk take on Mickey Newbury's "Why You Been Gone So Long?", from the unwieldy, beat-driven "Fire Engine (Red Explosion)" to the atmospheric "Waves" featuring accordion by Cowboy Junkies-sideman Jaro Czerwinec, from the breezy, Lindsay-Buckinghamesque pop of "The Herd" (in which Maize shows what a clssy vocalist he is) to "Deep Water (31 Mile Lake)", a Finlayson-Tom Wilson (of Blackie & The Rodeo Kings) co-write sung by Jessy Bell Smith. "Barely Made It Through" makes the hearts of longtime Skydiggers fans jump for joy: co-founder Pater Cash is back on lead vocal & guitar for this Cash Brothers number. And that's not the only Cash Brothers reference on the album. Any Maize sings Peter's ballad "Without Me" and Andrew - who is a member of the Canadian parliament these days - has contributed two songs. "You've Been Gone So Long" with its countrified, jingle-jangle arrangement sounds particularly Byrdsy. While "You'll Come Around" shows a kinship to Blue Rodeo. The album's title track "Northern Shore" is simply gorgeous, a dramatic vocal performance by Andy Maize accompanied only on piano.

One cannot help but be bowled over. A band that's been around the block, has had to deal with label bankruptcy, personnel changes, and one or two bad choices is back in top form. Northern Shore is a powerful, timely album and a great addition to the CanAmericana canon.
