In a recording career that's lasted successfully seventeen years, British songwriter Julian Dawson has made his first ever studio album on English soil.
Recent recordings have all taken place in the USA with almost all American players. For his new album "Under The Sun" Dawson stepped back to the beginnings of his career and called together a band comprising two of his oldest friends in the music business, Kimberley Rew (Katrina & The Waves) and Andy Metcalfe (Soft Boys, Squeeze, Robyn Hitchcock). The American influence of recent years is represented by drummer and Nashville resident, Daniel Tashian.
The album reflects Dawson's growing passion for simplicity and soulfulness in his songwriting and seems to sound traditional and modern at the same time. Recorded and mixed in two intense weeks with the four musicians set up live in the studio, most of the performances are first and second takes, with minimal overdubbing and very little sound enhancement. All the musicians contributed on several different instruments and everybody sang. The oly guest performers are Julian's two children Robyn and Holly, who harmonise on "We Can't Be Together" and legendary piano player and Who sideman, John "Rabbit" Bundrick, who appears on several tracks.
Dawson wrote all the songs either alone or in contribution with Nashville friends such as Dan Penn (Amazing Disappearing Daddy) and arranged the tracks with the band - but always looking for that loose groove and intimate feel.
Reflecting events, people he's met and places he's been are twelve more slices of life on Dawson's most personal album yet.
