ALGUIRE, TREVOR

ALGUIRE, TREVOR

"The Only Thing", "Rosewell Street", "Long Time Ago", "On My Own", "Means To An End" komplettieren ein herausragendes Album!

TREVOR ALGUIRE is not just another talent of the inexhaustible pool of strong Canadian singer/songwriters but one with all the positive facets for an international career - according to his solo debut As Of Yesterday. Alguire grew up in Ottawa and is part of a music scene with well-known acts like Jim Bryson & The Occasionals, Sarah Harmer and Kathleen Edwards with a very good connection to Blue Rodeo, the Skydiggers and Fred Eaglesmith. Trevor Alguire is a treasure which just has to be raised.

For the first time he drew attention in 2004 with the release of the album Narrowed Down under the band name Mercury Pickup. The album got critically acclaim by the local press. The sound of the band was compared to Steve Earle and Tom Petty, from Blue Rodeo to Wilco and Uncle Tupelo. Well - these names are dropped in tons of album reviews, but Trevor Alguire proves with As Of Yesterday that Narrowed Down was not just a nine-day wonder.

Amazing how easy and supremely good Trevor Alguire finds a way between Alt. Country and roots rock, Americana and guitar rock, folk and rock'n'roll. The result can be called Country Rock, a kind of Country Rock connecting generations of music lovers, breathing the flair of big cities as well as country air, enjoying people sitting on a porch, fans in alternative rock clubs or in a sticky roadhouse along the highways in the Canadian prairie.

Since Alguire is a songwriter, producer, singer and playing the acoustic guitar, he undoubtedly is the focus on the record and on stage, but his first class backing band, a totally renewed edition of Mercury Pickup, is part of the successful work: guitarist Rob Skitmore, bass player Simon Wright and drummer Peter Von Althen (Skydiggers, Fred Eaglesmith, Lynn Miles) are the core of the band, additional musicians are keyboarder/recording engineer Dave Draves (Kathleen Edwards, Kate Maki, Julie Doiron) and the third guitar player Tom Thompson (Jim Bryson, Kathleen Edwards). Especially Thompson and his harmonica, mandolin and exquisite pedal steel playing is fantastic and there is quite a variety of things going on there.
As Of Yesterday contains ten self-penned songs, rock tunes and melodic ballads, straight and catchy, simple but with a lot of enthusiasm. Alguire tells stories about the life on the road, personal feelings, his shows pictures of the country and its people. He is a great storyteller with empathy and a singer with emotional depth with the help of his warm, sonorous and strong voice - somewhere between Richard Buckner, Tim Easton and Michael Hall.

The record kicks off with "Through Me", a song with all the elements of a No Depression hit and heavy references to nobody else than Son Volt. The level can easily be held with the uptempo track "Blink" and another country rocker, "Two Birds" featuring harmonica and three guitars, the acoustic "Well And Loved" and the mandolin and pedal steel decorated "Around The Bend". After five songs it's obvious that the other half of the album will have the same fantastic quality: "The Only Thing", "Rosewell Street", "Long Time Ago", "On My Own" and "Means To An End" complete As Of Yesterday as an incredibly good album!
