In jenen "300 Gigs plus"-Jahren holte sich Wonderland Know How, Selbstvertrauen und Anerkennung.

What Good Can Drinkin' Do' zuprosten...!

Carolyn Wonderland - Blues Guitar Woman, Roots Rock Lady, Vocal Goddess!!

CAROLYN WONDERLAND - a small woman with a colossal voice and gigantic guitar skills. This exceptionally gifted blues & roots artist from Texas seems to still be in the midst of her musical development. Almost twenty years ago she started her career as a singer and guitarist in Houston before she moved to Austin in the late 90ies. By now she's in her late 30ies with her 8th album under her belt - not counting her numerous side projects. Peace Meal is the title of this great new record which takes her a step or two away from the narrow confines of the Texas Blues genre to a stronger roots & Americana-oriented sound. Peace Meal is not only Carolyn Wonderland's debut on Blue Rose Records, it's also apt to be the breakthrough for this energetic, dynamic, authentic artist. The album's twelve excellent tracks certainly fulfil even the highest expectations.

Blues guitar woman! Certainly one could write entire paragraphs about Carolyn Wonderland as one of the very few female electric blues guitarists who can easily compete with her male colleagues. But that would neglect the many other talents of this highly in-demand Texas artist. She is also a high-caliber songwriter who pens the bulk of her material but most of all, she is an electrifying singer in all roots-related genres. She can be the Joplinesque, whiskey-drenched shouter in one song and the strong-voiced Americana singer inspired by Bonnie Raitt, Michelle Malone or Susan Tedeschi in the very next. And then there's Carolyn Wonderland, the integrative force on the scene, often involved in multiple projects at the same time as a member of the all-women Southern rockers Sis DeVille, lead singer in Jerry Lightfoot's Band Of Wonder or participant in the Imperial Golden Crown Harmonizers' gospel meeting. She also jams with the likes of Robert Earl Keen or Los Lobos, tours with Buddy Guy, Bob Dylan and Johnny Winter and co-writes with Guy Forysth, Sarah Brown and Candye Kane.

Born in Houstin in 1972 to a musical family, she grew up with guitars rather than dolls and developed her love for electrified blues in her teens, founding her longtime backing band The Imperial Monkeys in the early 90ies. Together they released four blues-based albums in Groove Milk (93), Truckstop Favorites Vol. 2 (94), Play With Matches (95) and Bursting With Flavor (97) and established themselves as a regular house act at Austin's legendary blues joint Antone's. In those years of 300-plus gigs, Carolyn Wonderland won experience, confidence and respect! Today, her name is one in a long line of local heroines like Lou Ann Barton, Angela Strehli, Sue Foley, Toni Price and Marcia Ball - oft-heard comparisons with icons like Janis Joplin and Stevie Ray Vaughan are not far-fetched.

It's only fair then that while she continued to tour with the Imperial Monkeys, it's been her name on the marquee and on posters & album covers since the change of the millennium. Alcohol & Salvation (01) and the Stephen Doster-produced Bloodless Revolution (03) were recorded under much the same circumstances as the earlier albums. Miss Understood in 2008, however, marked her step over into the field of Americana. Produced by Asleep At The Wheel-mastermind Ray Benson and recorded with a host of Austin's finest musicians, she worked her way through a wide spectrum of roadhouse rock, boogie, r&b, funk, singer-songwriter sounds, Texas folk, country and back home to the blues.

And since it seems there's no limit for her, Carolyn Wonderland goes one step further with Peace Meal. It's an excellent, stylistically equally diverse followup to Miss Understood. The album title alludes to her dedication to social causes in Austin and elsewhere like providing shelter & soup kitchens for the homeless, health insurance for musicians and the legalization of marijuana. It's a sign of her confidence to start the album with a lesser-known Janis Joplin number which she interprets with power & flamboyance - someone certainly sang along up in rock heaven with "What Good Can Drinkin' Do". This is followed by a successful mix of six original compositions and traditional material by Muddy Waters (Two Trains), Elmore James/Robert Johnson (Dust My Broom), and Bo Diddley (Samuel Smith's "I Can Tell") - she also takes on a song with Grateful Dead connections ("Golden Stairs" by Vince Welnick/Robert Hunter) and one by Bob Dylan ("Meet Me In The Morning"). She cherishes her friendship with Dylan who invited her to jam with him after hearing her song "Bloodless Revolution" and was subsequently bowled over!

Three illustrious producers share credits on Peace Meal. Ray Benson once again produced the bulk of the album, Larry Campbell recorded four tracks in Levon Helm's Woodstock barn-cum-studio (where he also worked with Helm, Ollabelle, Paul Simon, Hot Tuna, Rosanne Cash, Solomon Burke and others) and provides guitars, pedal steel and mandolin. As a surprise, Michael Nesmith, the 68-year-old ex-Monkees leader/country rocker/video innovator/networking strategist turns up as producer of "Dust My Broom". In 2 minutes and 45 seconds Wonderland on lap steel & vocals, accompanied only on piano and drums succeeds in polishing up the old nugget. If she doesn't play lap steel or mandolin (as in Shine On), Wonderland plays an excellent electric guitar throughout. Among the hand-picked studio musicians on Peace Meal are Cindy Cashdollar (lap steel), Sole El-Saleh (keyboards), Lincoln Scleifer and Glenn Fukunaga on bass, Rob Hooper (drums) and the McCrary sisters on gospel-infused backing vocals.
