Solo! Acoustic (Vol. 1)

„Obwohl ich bereits vierzig Jahre lang auf Solotourneen rund um die Welt unterwegs war, habe ich bisher nie ein Album mit nur mir und meiner akustischen Gitarre veröffentlicht. Ich machte mir oft Gedanken darüber, denn viele Fans kamen nach diesen eher intimen, ruhigen Shows zum Merchandise-Tisch und fragten, welche dieser Alben so klingen wie das, das ich gerade gespielt hatte. Ich verwies auf ältere Veröffentlichungen wie „Fluorescent“ oder die „Live in Bremen“-Collection, die ich 2003 mit Jason Victor gemacht hatte, aber keine dieser dokumentierten Aufnahmen der Vergangenheit kamen dem nahe, das sie gerade gehört und gesehen hatten.
In den letzten paar Jahren habe ich ziemlich viel von Bill Callahan angehört. Er ist ein toller Songwriter, schreibt wagemutige Texte und seine Stimme ist markant und schön. Aber mir gefielen auch die Produktionen seiner Platten. Sie alle klingen fantastisch. Ich las die Anmerkungen und sah, dass sie fast alle von Brian Beattie in Austin, Texas aufgenommen worden waren. Ich wusste, dass das der Sound war, den ich auf meinem ersten Solo-Acoustic-Album haben wollte.
Wie es der Zufall wollte, hatten The Dream Syndicate am 1. November 2019 eine Show in Austin und ich hatte für einige Tage keine Verpflichtungen. Ich nahm Kontakt mit Brian auf. Er hatte an diesen Tagen Zeit, also machte ich Pläne, eine Auswahl an Songs meines Backkataloges zu treffen, von denen ich dachte, dass sie für dieses Vorhaben und diesen Sound passen würden. Schon immer liebe ich diese unvorhersehbare Art zu arbeiten, und in der Vergangenheit hatte ich versucht, Alben zu machen, für die ich Material wählte oder schrieb, die sich den jeweiligen Situationen anpasste, wie zum Beispiel mit Chris Eckmann im pastoralen Ljubljana („Crossing Dragon Bridge“) oder die ungehobelte Wildheit der Band Come in ihrer düsteren Heimatstadt Boston („Melting In ther Dark“). Dieses Album war eine ähnliche Herangehensweise. Wie viele Songschreiber bin ich versucht, meine Texte und Stimmen sicher zu verpacken, indem ich zusätzliche Ebenen einbaue, damit ich mich etwas weniger verletzlich fühle. Nicht diesmal. Ich suchte einige der textlich stärksten und emotionalsten Stücke aus meinem Katalog und wusste, dass die Stimme der Punkt war, auf den ich mich bei den Aufnahmen fokusieren wollte. Und genau das geschah dann auch. Brians Ansatz war, mich in einen Raum zu stellen, um mich herum alte Mikros, Gitarren und Prozessoren und meinen Beitrag in der ehrlichsten Art und Weise einzufangen.
Ich fragte meinen alten Freund Randy Franklin, die Aufnahmen zu überwachen und mit zu produzieren. Randy ist ein super Musiker und auch der Besitzer der Yard Dog Gallery, wo ich oft meine Malereien zeige. Du sieht eine davon direkt hier als Albumcover. Er kennt meine musikalische Geschichte und ich dachte mir, dass er gute Ideen für die Songs hatte, die ich spielen wollte, wie ich sie am besten spielen und welche Stolperfallen ich vermeiden sollte. Am Wichtigsten war für mich, dass ich es mir mit Randy und Brian im Kontrollraum erlauben konnte, mich einfach hinzusetzen, zu spielen und mir nicht allzu viele weitere Gedanken machen musste.
Ich nahm 26 Songs in einer einzigen 8-Stunden-Session auf und fühlte mich frei und völlig losgelöst. Es fühlte sich großartig an. Den nächsten Tag verbrachten wir mit Mixen und der Auswahl unserer Favoriten. Und das war es auch schon. Wir fingen eine Zeit und einen Punkt und ein „First-Meeting“ in einer Weise ein, die euch hoffentlich fühlen lässt, als wärt ihr zusammen mit uns dabei gewesen. Ich freue mich darauf, diesen Moment mit auf meine Solo-Tourneen zu nehmen, die in den nächsten Jahren kommen werden. Wenn also das nächste Mal jemand fragt, was so klingt wie das, das gerade auf der Bühne zu hören war, kann ich „Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1“ in die Hand nehmen und sagen: „Bitte schön mein Freund. Welcome to Austin, Texas.“

"Despite 40 years of solo tours all around the world, I had never released a record of just me and my acoustic guitar. I’d thought about it a lot and fans who came to these intimate, stripped down shows would often drift by the merch booth at the end and ask “Which of these records sounds like the show you just played?” I’d point to some older releases like “Fluorescent” or the “Live In Bremen” collection I made in 2003 with Jason Victor but none of the documented history could provide a literal translation of what they’d been watching.
In the last few years I’d been listening quite a bit to Bill Callahan. He’s a great songwriter, daring lyricist and his voice is distinctive and beautiful. But I also really loved the production on his records. They all sound so fantastic. I checked the credits and saw they were almost all recorded by Brian Beattie at a studio in Austin, Texas. I knew that was the sound I’d want to have on my first solo acoustic record.
As it turned out, the Dream Syndicate had a show in Austin on November 1 of last year and I didn’t have to be anywhere for a few days. I got in touch with Brian and he was free those days so I made plans to record a selection of songs from my back catalogue that I thought would suit his approach and sound. I always enjoy this blind-date, travelogue style of working and in the past I tried to make records in which I would choose or write material to represent some mystical fantasy of what my music might sound like, for example, with Chris Eckman in the pastoral city of Ljubljana (“Crossing Dragon Bridge”) or the blunt ferocity of the band Come in their gritty hometown of Boston (“Melting In the Dark.”).
This one was a similar approach. Like many songwriters, I’m often tempted to shelter my lyrics and vocals by adding extra layers so that I feel a little less vulnerable. Not this time. I went for some of the most lyric-heavy, emotionally stark songs in my catalog and knew that the vocal would be the focal point of the record. And that’s exactly what happened. Brian’s approach was indeed to put me in a room, surround me with vintage mics, guitars and processors and just capture my performance in the most honest, stark way possible.
I asked my old friend Randy Franklin to oversee and co-produce the record. Randy is a fine musician and also the owner of the Yard Dog Gallery where I often show my paintings. You can see one of them right there on the cover. He knows my musical history and I felt like he’d have strong ideas of the songs I should play, how best to play them and what I do best and which pitfalls I should avoid. Mostly, I knew that having Randy and Brian in the control room would allow me to just sit and play and not think too much beyond that.
Sure enough, I recorded 26 songs in one 8-hour session and felt loose and free and untethered. It felt great. The following day was spent mixing and selecting our favorites. And that was it. We captured a time and a place and a first-meeting in a way that hopefully lets you feel like you’re right there with us. I look forward to taking that moment in time on the road with me in the years to come on my solo tours so that the next time someone asks “Which of these sounds like what I just saw” I can pick up “Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1” and say “here you go, my friend. Welcome to Austin, Texas.”
