Keeper

(Songwriter/Roots Rock/Alt.Country Rock) 2011 Yep Roc - nach der etwas sanft-seichten Teamarbeit mit den Sadies auf 'Country Club' (2009) kehrt der "große alte" L.A. Punker-gone-Alt.Americana John Doe wieder zurück zu etwas mehr Abenteuer, Elektrizität, Unvorhersehbarkeit und Lautstärke, kurz: Rock'n Roll! R&R mit großer Roots Rock-Nähe. Dabei hört er sich - besonders gesanglich - so reif und melodisch an wie kaum zuvor, die energetischen Aggressionen seiner alten Kultband X oder die extreme Düsternis in solchen Solalben wie 'Meet John Doe' und 'Kissingsohard' und auch die früher so häufig rebellierenden Texte sind längst Geschichte. Doe hat hier in diesen 12 munter gekoppelten Songs eher die Fortsetzung zum 2007er Album 'A Year In The Wilderness' gesucht und zeigt sich in Würde gealtert, etwa so wie seine Szenefreunde Peter Case und Dave Alvin. So ist sein mittlerweile 8. Album (die Kollaborationen mit den Sadies und Jill Sobule nicht gerechnet) denn auch eher eine zeitgerechte Bestandsaufnahme, umgesetzt von einem großartigen, einflussreichen Musiker, der seinen Frieden gefunden zu haben scheint und einer erlesenen Begleitgesellschaft aus alten Weggefährten und Freunden: Smokey Hormel, Val McCallum, Greg Leisz, Doug Pettibone, Howe Gelb, Don Was, Steve Berlin, Victor Bisetti, Cindy Wasserman, Patty Griffin, Jill Sobule u.a.

John Doe is one of modern music's most authentic & enduring songwriters. A keystone of the legendary LA punk rock band X, the Chicago Tribune called him, ''punk rock's golden throat.'' While touring with X over the last 30 years, Doe also cultivated his own career as a solo artist, diving head-first into alt country, folk, and gut-wrenching rock'n'roll. His latest record is KEEPER, the glass-half-full counterpart to 2007's emotionally damaged A Year in the Wilderness. KEEPER was recorded over six months with hit-making producer/mixer Dave Way and features performances from legends and friends alike. Patty Griffin, Don Was, Smokey Hormel and Steve Berlin take star turns along with great performances from Cindy Wasserman and Jill Sobule. Doe says of the process, ''Pieces of sadness exists in everything but it doesn't have to be the only thing. I finally figured out how to write a love song where the people actually get loved.'' This is a record by a veteran artist who has come back from the brink with his arms full of fast and beautiful songs.
