The legendary Saxon Pub in South Austin has been the springboard for a number of bands - just take a look at the extensive roster of Texas artists on Blue Rose Records. The Resentments, Deadman, Shurman and The Band Of Heathens are among the bands that regularly play (or played) at the vintage live club on South Lamar. Blue Rose's newest signing is a typical Austin roots'n'roll combo that fits well into this list: The South Austin Moonlighters are a quartet of veterans of the illustrious Austin scene. Phil Hurley, Josh Zee, Lonnie Trevino, Jr. & Phil Bass have amassed a wealth of credits and recorded a live album at the Saxon, now they're releasing their first studio album. Burn & Shine is filled to the brim with great songs, great performances and charismatic musicians with a wide stylistic range and a palpable love of music. The album is a strong testament to the power of Texamericana rock and it will turn the South Austin Moonlighters into a hot property far outside of Austin and spread their name all over Europe.

In the beginning, there was the Sin City showcase at SXSW 2011, the Live Music Capital Of The World's ever-growing juggernaut of a live music festival. Aside from the mega event's hustle & bustle there are still occasions to be cherished by Americana and roots music lovers, and this was certainly one of them with performances by Shurman, the Mother Truckers, Deadman and Stonehoney. Some of these musicians became friends and started playing together for the sheer fun of if between gigs of their respective main projects. But it soon became more than just a side project - they all felt they had found common ground and a groove. Soon, they also found a name, booked gigs, wrote songs together and at SXSW 2012 they caught the ears of a lot of talent scouts although it took another year until they had finished their first studio recordings.

Singing-songwriting drummer Phil Bass has been a pro for over 30 years, never missing a chance to play a gig, be they private functions, TV jingles, movie soundtracks, touring with Monte Montgomery, recording with Mark Jungers and Houston Marchman or as band member of Whiskey Sisters, the female-dominated combo that grew out of the Mother Truckers. This is where he reunited with Josh Zee and Lonnie Trevino jr. Zee, emigrated from the Bay Area scene ten years ago, has achieved recognition as lead guitarist and co-leader of the Mother Truckers with his wife, singer Teal Collins. While the Mother Truckers are on hiatus, Zee has some time on his hands. Lonnie Trevino jr. played for many years with Monte Montgomery (with Phil Bass) and Texan blues guitarist Mike Zito before he joined Austin cult band Deadman. After personnel changes in that band, he toured with Fastball before he joined the Whiskey Sisters. The South Austin Moonlighters' secret bandleader is guitarist/singer/songwriter Phil Hurley who previously enjoyed modest success on the East Coast with the Gigolo Aunts, a typical 80ies/90ies college/guitar rock/pop band. With Stonehoney he pursued a great mix of Eagles and alt.country rock but wasn't involved in the songwriting as much as he would have liked - so he was open to a new challenge.

Burn & Shine offers a multi-faceted, well-crafted mix of Texas-style roots rock with a strong foundation in all-American rock'n'roll, R&B, country, funk, blues and classic rock. The album's 13 songs (plus two short jams) were all written by the band's members, some of them by all of them. Every one of them contributes a different flavour and lead vocals on their own songs (with harmonies by all of them) which makes the album attractive and versatile. It's off to a convincing start with the powerful, dynamic roots rock of Josh Zee's 'Land Mines', the funky R&B of 'Found My Way Back' and 'Old Engine', a Phil Hurley-written ballad with edgy electric guitars. Hurley's 'King Of Friday Night' is a fast, twangy, roots'n'roll/rockabilly number reminiscent of the Beat Farmers. Lonnie Trevino jr's 'Can't Live Without You' is based on a Motown beat while 'One More Time' is a honky tonk blues with Southern rock guitars. The gospel-soul of '29 Miles' starts out like a song from John Fogerty's Blue Ridge Rangers project before it segues into Los Lonely Boys territory. 'Once I Saw A UFO' by Josh Zee is flowing, radio-friendly country rock/guitar rock material with an irresistible chorus. 'Moonlight Ride' is the quartet's theme song, a band-composed hybrid of Texas shuffle, Southern rock and New Orleans-R&B replete with gospel vocals provided by the Whiskey Sisters. 'Falling Out Of Love' is another team composition, an old-school blues rock ballad sung with great feel by Phil Hurley. The title track 'Burn & Shine' was co-written by Hurley and Shurman frontman Aaron Beavers who may have initiated the South Austin Moonlighters. It's a great rock'n'roll track with full-on electric guitars in the style of Arc Angels or Band Of Heathens - certain to be a live show highlight on future tours.

The album, produced with a nice old-fashioned vibe by keyboarder David Boyle (Ugly Americans/Bob Schneider, Stephen Bruton, Shinyribs) ends with 'I'll Be Around', the only all-acoustic, almost folkie number. Austin, Texas has given us a new great band with a terrific album: The South Austin Moonlighters and Burn & Shine.
