The SunKings, Robert Pounds (vocals, bass), Dave Gwinn (guitar), Greg Galbraith (guitars) und Trey Wheeler (drums), ehemals bekannt unter dem Namen The Cool Arrows, taten sich in den 80er Jahren in El Paso, Texas zusammen. Sie machen sich schnell einen guten Namen und spielten mit Bands wie den Gin Blossoms oder Tragically Hip.

In den frühen 90er Jahren gingen die Bandmitglieder getrennte Wege und anderen Interessen nach. Nachdem sie sich aus jeweils anderen Bands "gestohlen" hatten, reformierten sie sich 1995 unter dem Namen The SunKings und nahmen ein Album auf, das 1996 auf dem Label Tortilla Records veröffentlicht wurde.

The SunKings wurden 1998 von Rich Hopkins (Sand Rubies, Luminarios) für dessen Label San Jacinto Records unter Vertrag genommen. Rich selbst ließ es sich nicht nehmen, das neue Album der Band, Adios, aufzunehmen. Die Gruppe spielt seit nunmehr einem Jahr regelmäßig in der Gegend um El Paso, oder aber auch in Austin, Houston oder Tucson. Sie spielten für Brother Cane und The Call und teilten sich die Bühne mit Labelkollegen wie den Sand Rubies oder Rich Hopkins & Luminarios.

Mit den Wurzeln des Rock der 70er Jahre (man denke an Bands wie Lynyrd Skynyrd oder die Faces) und einem gehörigen Schuß Southern Rock-Groove, der an die Black Crowes erinnert, spielen die SunKings einen ehrlichen Rock'n'Roll ähnlich dem der Brandos, Gin Blossoms oder auch der Sand Rubies.

The SunKings, Robert Pounds (vocals, bass) Dave Gwinn (guitars, vocals), Greg Galbraith (guitars) and Trey Wheeler (drums), originally known as the Cool Arrows, formed in El Paso, Texas in the 80s. They quickly gained a strong local reputation opening shows for the likes of the Gin Blossoms and Tragically Hip.

In the early 90s the band members went their separate ways to pursue other interests. After successfully stealing each other away from other bands, they regrouped in 1995 as the SunKings, and proceeded to record and release their first effort on Tortilla Records, which came out in 1996.

The SunKings were signed this year by Rich Hopkins (of Sand Rubies' fame) to record a CD for San Jacinto Records. Rich Hopkins lent his production skills to the release, entitled Adios. The band plays regularly around El Paso and over the past year they have expanded their horizons with performances in Austin, Houston, and Tucson. They have opened for Brother Cane and The Call, and have shared the stage with label mates the Sand Rubies, and Rich Hopkins & Luminarios.

With roots firmly in riffy 70s-influenced guitar, (think Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Faces) layered with a deep southern rock groove that recalls The Black Crowes, the SunKings' Adios has a straightforward, honest rock 'n roll appeal. Although it calls upon strong influences, this music retains its timelessness when a tight-knit group like the SunKings has their way with the vibe that echoes through from the past to now. Rich even manages to sneak his signature guitar onto one song, “Believe”, and is completely in line with the direction the band is heading.
