JULIAN DAWSON ist mittlerweile in Europa und den USA über 40 Jahre als Musiker und Songschreiber aktiv und hat zwischen den unzähligen Live-Auftritten immer wieder die Zeit gefunden, neue Alben aufzunehmen. Derzeit zählen 21 Solo-Alben zu seinen Veröffentlichungen (davon drei Compilations), weiterhin ist er auf zahlreichen Produktionen als Sänger, Musiker (mit seinem Markenzeichen, der Mundharmonika) oder als Produzent tätig und zu hören.

Die Melodien und Texte seiner Songs haben seinen Stil und seine Produktionen, die immer einen sehr hohen Standard beweisen, ständig geprägt und die auch immer wieder von außergewöhnlichen Musikern, die ihn bei seinen Aufnahmen begleiten, honoriert werden.

Während viele Künstler dazu tendieren, eine Erfolgsformel zu finden und mit der dann die Karriere aufzubauen und fortzuführen, war Julians musikalischer Weg immer eine Neuerfindung mit Einflüssen des britischen Folk, des rauen Blues, klassischen Country und Sixties Pop. Von seinen Anfängen in der Pub Rock-Szene Großbritanniens kam mit den 80er Jahren eine große Veränderung, als er das Inner Space-Studio der deutschen Experimental-Band Can benutzte, um dort für die Plattenfirma Polydor zwei vielbeachtete Alben aufzunehmen (As Real As Disneyland und Luckiest Man In The Western World).

Ein erster Besuch in Nashville in den frühen Neunziger Jahren führte zu vielen erfolgreichen gemeinsamen Kompositionen mit dort ansässigen Songwritern sowie zu zwei völlig unterschiedlich klingenden Alben (Fragile As China und Headlines), produziert von Garry Talent, seines Zeichen auch Bassist bei der E Street Band von Bruce Springsteen.
Reisen in die USA wurden zu einem normalen Teil seines Lebens und zwei Alben, aufgenommen in New York City, folgten (How Human Hearts Behave und Travel On), wo gleichgesinnte Kollegen wie Dan Penn, Nicky Hopkins und Lucinda Williams ihren Beitrag leisteten.

Alle diese unterschiedlichen Produktionen sind auf dieser Werkschau vertreten und jene, die mit Julian Dawsons Alben oder Live-Shows vertraut sind, werden diese Anthologie genießen. Sie umfasst einige seiner besten Arbeiten, kombiniert mit seit langer Zeit nicht mehr erhältlichen Stücken oder bisher unveröffentlichten Raritäten.

Persönlich kann ich mich an keinen anderen Künstler erinnern, der eine Karriere aufweist, die so unterschiedliche Musiker wie die bereits erwähnte Band Can vereint mit Jazz und Toots Thielemans, Country mit Vince Gill und den Louvin Brothers, Soul mit Dan Penn und Lucinda Williams, Rock mit Gene Parsons und Little Feat, Folk Rock mit Richard Thompson, Iain Matthews und den Roches sowie legendären Künstlern vom Kaliber eines Duane Eddy.

Die Songs, das Singen und die Liebe, vor einem Publikum aufzutreten, sind die Gründe, warum Julian Dawsons musikalisches Leben auch nach 40 Jahren immer noch lebhaft ist. Hier ist ein Blick zurück auf einige der Höhepunkte...

Life And Soul - A Retrospective 1982-1995 erscheint als opulentes 3 CD-Set mit 56 Songs in einer Box. Die CD 3 enthält 16 rare bzw. unveröffentlichte Stücke. Die CDs stecken jeweils in einer Tasche, dazu gibt es ein 40-Seiten-Booklet mit Liner Notes und ausführlichen Infos wie Aufnahmedatum, Musiker sowie kleine Geschichten von Julian zu allen Stücken.

JULIAN DAWSON has now been active as a musician and songwriter, in Europe and the USA, for almost forty years, breaking away occasionally from live performance long enough to make a few recordings. The current count stands at twenty-one solo albums (three of them compilations), as well as numerous guest appearances as singer, session player (with his signature harmonica) or as producer.

The distinctive melodic and lyrical features of his writing have been well served over the years by a production style that's gratifyingly uncluttered - and he has always surrounded himself with outstanding musicians.

While many artists tend to find a successful formula and stick to it, Julian's career has been a constant journey of re-invention, with influences drawn from British folk, raw blues, classic country and sixties pop music. From his beginnings in the UK pub-rock environment, the mid-eighties saw a move to experimental German rock band Can's Inner Space studio near Cologne, where he recorded two fine albums (As Real As Disneyland and Luckiest Man In The Western World) for Polydor.

A first visit to Nashville in the early-nineties led to many successful co-writes and to the recording of two entirely different sounding albums (Fragile As China and Headlines), produced by E Street Band bass-player Garry Tallent, and featuring a host of local talents.
Trips to America then became a regular part of his life and two New York-based albums followed (How Human Hearts Behave and Travel On), featuring collaborations with like-minded colleagues such as Dan Penn, Nicky Hopkins and Lucinda Williams.

All these diverse productions are represented here and those already familiar with Julian Dawson's albums or live concerts will relish this anthology. It gathers together some of his finest work, combining long unavailable tracks with never before released rarities and demos.

Personally I can't think of another artist with a career path eclectic enough to comfortably include brushes with avant-garde performers Can, jazz with Toots Thielemans, country with Vince Gill and the Louvin Brothers, soul with Dan Penn and Lucinda Williams, rock with Gene Parsons and Little Feat, folk-rock with Richard Thompson, Iain Matthews and the Roches and a peppering of legendary performers the calibre of Duane Eddy to round things off.

The unifying thread to his still vibrant musical life remains the songs, the singing and a deep love of performing. Here's a look back at some of the highlights…

Life And Soul - A Retrospective 1982-1995 comes as a gorgeous 3 CD set containing 56 songs in a box. CD 3 features sixteen rare and unissued tracks. All three CDs are in a slipcard, the box also contains a 40 page booklet with liner notes and detailed song information as recording date, musicians and short stories. The icing on the cake are numerous photos from Julian's private archives.
