The Party Is Over (Recovered)

Morgan Wade war noch nie jemand, der ein Blatt vor den Mund nahm oder sich schüchtern gab, eine Tatsache, die sie auf ihrem neuen Album „The Party Is Over (recovered)“ immer wieder unterstreicht. Wie der Titel des Projekts andeutet, stammen einige der Songs aus der Zeit vor Wades Majorlabel-Vertrag und wurden hier in brandneuen Versionen „wiederhergestellt“. Wades langjähriger Kollaborateur und Tourbandkollege Clint Wells produzierte das Album und fand die richtigen Nuancen, um Wades furchtlose Geschichten von gefährlicher Anziehung, unerwiderter Liebe und schlechten Entscheidungen zu unterstreichen. Der Titelsong des Albums „The Party Is Over“ – einer von Wades älteren Songs – ist eine krachende Hymne auf die Anziehung, die noch lange nach dem Abklingen der Wirkung der Rauschmittel nachklingt, während die Lead-Single „East Coast“ diese Fixierungen auf die Spitze treibt und eine Beziehung beschreibt, die jemanden an den Rand des Abgrunds treibt. „High in Your Apartment“ bietet einen brennenden Bericht über eine lieblose Affäre inmitten eines unruhigen Meeres aus Gitarrengeräuschen, und der Albumabschluss „Hardwood Floor“ schildert den qualvollen Kampf einer Frau, Mutter zu werden.
Wade schafft all dies, während sie sich mit Leichtigkeit durch verschiedene Musikstile bewegt. Sie fühlt sich bei gitarrenlastigen Songs wie dem Twang-Punk-Kracher „Candy from Strangers“ und der stürmischen Grunge-Nummer „Songs I Won’t Remember“ wie zu Hause, versteht es aber ebenso, Zärtlichkeit und Verletzlichkeit zu vermitteln, wie etwa im wirbelnden R&B in „Parking Garage“ oder den akustischen Klängen von „Stay“. Und das Beste: Sie klingt dabei wie keine andere und sagt, was sie denkt. „The Party Is Over (recovered)“, das Wades Vergangenheit und Gegenwart verbindet, zeigt, dass sie nichts von ihrer Hingabe verloren hat, Licht in die dunklen Winkel zu bringen, wo sich die Wahrheit verbirgt.

Morgan Wade has never been one to mince words or play coy, a fact that she underscores repeatedly on her new album The Party Is Over (recovered). The follow-up to 2024’s acclaimed Obsessed, Wade continues the intense exploration of her psyche’s recesses across 11 songs that she again wrote solo.
As ever, the results are thrilling. As the project’s title notes, a handful of the songs date back to before Wade signed her major-label deal and have been “recovered” here with all-new versions. Wade’s longtime collaborator and touring bandmate Clint Wells produced the album, finding the right shades to complement Wade’s fearless tales of dangerous attraction, unrequited love, and bad decisions. The album’s title track “The Party Is Over”—one of Wade’s older songs—is a crashing anthem about attraction that lingers long after the intoxicants wear off, while the lead single “East Coast” takes those fixations to an extreme in its depiction of a relationship that pushes someone to the edge. “High in Your Apartment” offers a searing account of a loveless hookup amid a troubled sea of guitar noise, and the album-closing “Hardwood Floor” chronicles a woman’s agonizing struggle to become a mother.
Wade does all of this while moving through musical styles with ease. She sounds perfectly at home on guitar-heavy tunes like twang-punk scorcher “Candy from Strangers” and the stormy grunge number “Songs I Won’t Remember,” but she’s equally capable of delivering tenderness and vulnerability, as with the swirling R&B in “Parking Garage” or acoustic strums of “Stay.” What’s more, she does all of it while sounding like no one else and speaking her mind. The Party Is Over (recovered), which connects Wade’s past and present, shows she hasn’t lost an ounce of her dedication to shining a light into the dark places where the truth hides out.
