The Tree Of Life

„Trying to Be Cool“ entstand, als Elliott in Chalmazel, der Heimatstadt seiner Frau, eine Orgelschleife aufnahm und daraus einen Song entwickelte. „The Tree of Life“ wurde von demselben Baum inspiriert, unter dem Elliott auf dem Cover sitzt. Dieser beeindruckende Baum stand in Gruchet-Saint-Siméon in der Normandie, wo Elliott nach den Dreharbeiten zum Video von „Night Surfing“ mit seinem langjährigen Gitarristen Olivier Durand im nahegelegenen Le Havre einige Wochen verbrachte. Es war ein produktiver Aufenthalt (Elliott glaubt, der Baum besäße besondere Kräfte), und er behauptet, dort etwa ein Dutzend Songs geschrieben zu haben.

“Trying to Be Cool” came about when Elliott recorded a loop on the church organ in his wife’s hometown of Chalmazel and worked it into a song. “The Tree of Life” was inspired by the same tree that Elliott is sitting under on the cover. That amazing tree was in the town of Gruchet-Saint-Siméon in the Normandy region of France where Elliott stayed for a few weeks after shooting the video of “Night Surfing” with his long-time guitarist Olivier Durand in nearby Le Havre. It was a productive stay (Elliott thinks the tree had special powers) and he claims he wrote about a dozen songs while there.
