"Ich war verrückt nach Musik" - so erinnert sich Joe Camilleri an die Zeit, als er anfing, in Bands zu spielen. "Ich war an nichts anderem interessiert. Ich habe Musik gelebt, geatmet und gegessen." 48 Alben später - Faithful Satellite ist sein 20. mit den Black Sorrows - und Camilleris Leidenschaft ist, falls möglich, größer als je zuvor. Mit seinem langjährigen Songwriting-Partner Nick Smith arbeitet er fast täglich an neuen Songs. Auf die Frage nach seinem Lieblingssong in seinem großen Katalog antwortet er augenzwinkernd: "Der nächste."

Sicher hat er eine unglaubliche Zahl an Zielen in seiner über 50-jährigen Karriere als Sänger, Songwriter, Musiker, Performer und Produzent auf der Höhe seiner Schaffenskunst erreicht. Als Frontmann der bahnbrechenden 70er-Jahre-Band JoJo Zep & The Falcons wurde Joe 2007 in die Hall Of Fame der australischen Musik (ARIA) aufgenommen. Mit den Black Sorrows hatte er Hits nicht nur in Australien, sondern auch in Europa. Dank mehrerer Tourneen haben sich Songs wie "Chained to the Wheel", "Harley & Rose" und "Hold On To Me" im Radio etabliert. Die Band hatte 1990 den ARIA-Preis für die beste Band gewonnen, im vergangenen Jahr war Endless Sleep als eines der besten Blues & Roots-Alben nominiert - die insgesamt 19. Nominierung der Band. Nach 20 Jahren kehrten die Black Sorrows 2015 nach Skandinavien zurück, um Endless Sleep auf Tour vorzustellen. Das Album erreichte 2015 Rang 13 in den EuroAmericana Charts.

Die Band hat mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichnete Alben veröffentlicht sowie weltweit über zwei Millionen Alben verkauft. Die Black Sorrows haben, seit sie von Joe 1983 zusammengestellt wurden, nie aufgehört zu touren oder im Studio zu arbeiten. Noch immer spielt er über 150 Shows pro Jahr - seine Energie scheint unerschöpflich ebenso wie die Leidenschaft und Hingabe, mit der er jeden Song, jede Platte und jeden Auftritt angeht. Immer schon ein produktiver Songschreiber, brachte Camilleri diesmal 30 Songs mit ins Studio, von denen am Ende zwölf auf Faithful Satellite landeten, die alle Genres abdecken, die Joe als Schreiber und Musikliebhaber über die Jahre inspiriert haben. Das Album ist wie eine Feier und Reise durch die lebendigsten Musikstile des 20. Jahrhunderts und trägt zugleich eindeutig die Handschrift von Joe Camilleri. "Ich habe mein Netz schon immer weit ausgeworfen", sagt er. Warum auch nicht? Schließlich bleibt es dadurch spannend - für den Künstler wie für sein Publikum. "Und das ist eine vielseitige, klasse Rockband!" Gemeinsam liefern sie eine fantastische Mischung ab, die Gospel, Zydeco, Reggae, Texas Swing, Old-School R&B, Soul, Dub, sogar etwas Noir im verführerischen "It Ain't Ever Gonna Happen" - und noch viel mehr - auf einem großen, selbstbewussten, stets beseelten Album zusammenbringt.
Es gibt auch Geschichten, großartige Geschichten; manche davon ergäben einen guten Film oder den Soundtrack zu den wilden Partyszenen in Baz Luhrmanns Verfilmung des "Großen Gatsby" - vorlaut, übersprudelnd und voll überbordender Freude. Andere sind persönlicher wie der Blue Beat Reggae von "Love Is On Its Way", Camilleris Hommage an den verstorbenen Gitarrenstilisten Ross Hannaford der Band Daddy Cool. "Ich habe ihn so viele Jahre spielen sehen", erklärt er. "Auch noch einmal kurz vor seinem Tode, und ich wollte etwas aus seiner wundervollen, musikalischen Welt, wie ich sie mir vorstellte, schreiben. Er hatte etwas ganz Besonderes, etwas Wundervolles." "Ich bin mit Haut und Haaren dabei", sagt Joe, das sei schon immer so gewesen. "Ich will immer weitermachen." Und wir alle sind eingeladen, mitzukommen und die Fahrt zu genießen. Man weiß nie, was sich hinter der nächsten Kurve verbirgt - aber sicherlich weiß Joe schon, wo die Reise hingeht und hat bereits einiges davon niedergeschrieben.

"I was just into music," says Joe Camilleri of his earliest days playing in bands. "That was all I was interested in. I would live it, breathe it, eat it." Forty-eight albums later, and his 20th - Faithful Satellite - with The Black Sorrows, and if anything he's even more passionate than he ever was. He and longtime songwriting partner Nick Smith pretty much write every day, and ask Joe about a favourite song in his vast catalogue and he'll tell you -the next one.

Sure, he's kicked a staggering number of goals over his 50+ years in music as a singer, songwriter, musician, performer and producer at the top of his game. As frontman of the seminal 70s band, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Joe was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007. With The Black Sorrows, there have been hits not only in Australia but also in Europe. Touring there several times playing songs that have become radio staples like "Chained to the Wheel", "Harley & Rose" and "Hold On To Me". There was an ARIA Award for Best Group in 1990, and last year their Endless Sleep album was nominated for the 2015 ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album, the band's 19th nomination. Returning for the first time in 20 years, The Black Sorrows toured Scandinavia in support of the release of Endless Sleep that reached #13 on the Euro Americana chart in 2015.

There have been multi-platinum albums and, collectively, sales of over two million records worldwide. The Black Sorrows, in one form or another, haven't stopped recording or performing since Joe pulled the thing together in 1983 - and he's still playing 150 shows a year! His energy seems boundless, matched only by the passion and commitment with which he approaches every song, every record, every performance.

Always prolific, he took the band into the studio with 30 songs from which 12 made the final cut for Faithful Satellite. And pretty much all bases are covered as the songs tumble through every kind of genre that has inspired Joe as a writer and passionate music lover himself over the years. The album is a kind of celebratory journey through the most vibrant musical styles of 20th century contemporary music and yet is always totally, unmistakably Joe Camilleri. "I've always cast a wide net," he admits, and why not? That's what keeps things exciting after all; for the artist and for the listener. "And it's a good rockin' band!" Together, they deliver a glorious potpourri that takes in gospel, zydeco, reggae, Texas swing, old-school R&B, soul, dub, even noir -shiver in the slinky "It Ain't Ever Gonna Happen" - and so much more by turns, delivered in one big, sassy, sometimes brassy, always spirited package.

There are stories too, great stories; some that could carry a short feature film in their own right or soundtrack those epic party scenes in Baz Luhrmann's version of The Great Gatsby-feisty, ebullient, cheeky or just plain "raise your hands" full of joy. Some are more personal, like the blue beat reggae "Love Is On Its Way", his homage to the late great guitar stylist Ross Hannaford of Daddy Cool fame: "Seeing him play for so many years," he explains, "just before he died I saw him playing somewhere and getting home I was compelled to write something from what I think his musical world was kind of like, that wonderful thing that he had."

"I'm in it for the long haul," is how Joe sees it, has always seen it. "I just want the future." And we're all welcome to get on board and enjoy the ride. You'll never know what's round the next corner, but guaranteed Joe's already had a peek and has written down a few impressions.
