Lost Keys

Seit 25 Jahren gehört der Singer/Songwriter/Keyboarder Ben Arnold zum festen Bestandteil der regen Philadelphia-Szene. Seine bewegte Karriere fußt auf gleich mehreren Säulen: als Teamplayer in verschiedenen attraktiven Bands, besonders aber als Solokünstler in eigener Sache. Bei uns ist er natürlich als eine der Führungsfiguren bei der kleinen Supergroup US Rails bekannt, die seit gut 6 Jahren regelmäßig tourt und Platten (auf Blue Rose) veröffentlicht. Daneben kann Arnold allerdings auf einen achtbaren Backkatalog unter eigenem Namen zurückblicken: 7 Alben standen da bislang zu Buche, darunter mit dem 2011er Blue Rose-Labeldebüt Simplify sein letztes und sicherlich bis dato stärkstes. Nun, da die US Rails eine schöpferische Pause einlegen, erscheint der lang erwartete Nachfolger - Lost Keys.

Ben Arnold's Werdegang lässt sich bis in die frühen 90er zurückverfolgen, als er zusammen mit seinem Freund Joseph Parsons in der Coffehouse/Club-Szene von Philadelphia auftrat und ein erstes Album (Soar, 1993) im Eigenvertrieb herausbrachte. Mit seiner mächtigen Sandpapierstimme im weiten Spektrum zwischen Randy Newman, John Hiatt und Bruce Springsteen wurde er auch für die großen Firmen interessant und so erschien das Folgealbum Almost Speechless im Herbst 1995 sogar bei Columbia. Trotz einer sehr professionellen Pop/Rock Mainstream-Produktion erfüllten sich kommerzielle Erwartungen aber nicht und Arnold richtete sich wieder im Independent-Terrain ein, veröffentlichte über die nächsten Jahre die CDs In Case I'm Gone Tomorrow (1999), Calico (2004), Solo (2006) und Never Mind My Blues (2007). Größeres Aufsehen erregte er mit dem Philly-Singer/Songwriter-Powerpaket 4 Way Street. In der stark CSNY-ausgerichteten Harmony/Folk Pop/Rock-Formation traf er auf seinen alten Weggefährten Joseph Parsons sowie die Szenekollegen Jim Boggia und Scott Bricklin. Als Sessionmusiker war Ben Arnold zudem auf Alben von Joseph Parsons und Tom Gillam zu hören, mit Drummer Matt Muir wurde er bei den Indie Pop/Rockern Pistol For Ringo gesichtet. All diese personellen Kontakte führten zum bereits erwähnten US Rails-Projekt mit den gleichberechtigten Singer/Songwritern Parsons, Gillam, Bricklin und einer wahren Serie von Veröffentlichungen und Europatourneen. Er übernimmt dabei den Part des Pianisten mit attraktiver Raspelstimme. Und es ist sicher nicht übertrieben zu bemerken, dass gerade seine Beiträge das Salz in der Americana-Suppe bei den US Rails bedeuten!

Lost Keys, Ben Arnold's bereits 8. Solowerk, bietet ein komplexes, überzeugendes Programm von 10 Stücken, die sehr organisch und gut abgehangen zwischen blue-eyed Soul, Piano Rock, East Coast-style Blue Collar Rock/Pop, etwas Blues, Funk und Memphis Pop angelegt sind und dabei Souveränität, Gelassenheit und musikhistorisches Know How beweisen sowie durchweg positive, groovy Signale aussenden. Der Künstler selbst bezeichnet Lost Keys als eine Hommage an die golden Zeiten von Motown, Stax, Philly Soul und Doo Wop. Wohl wahr! Songs wie der Opener 'Stupid Love' oder das spätere 'One Heart' rufen mit ihren aufwändig gestalteten orchestralen Arrangements gleichermaßen einen Bruce Springsteen zur Zeit von 'The River', den unbeschwerten Tamla Motown-Beat der 60er und die üppige Tanzweltatmosphäre des Sound of Philadelphia von Gamble-Huff Mitte der 70er ins Gedächtnis. Das funkige, schwarze 'Cannonball' und das druckvolle 'Detroit People' könnte ein straighter Joe Cocker irgendwann in den 80ern gesungen haben, 'Freedom' ist allerfeinster blue-eyed Crooner Soul Pop à la Michael McDonald und das abschließende 'When Love Fades Away' trägt die groovigen Züge eines klassischen Hits von Hall & Oates. Besonders Ben Arnold's Stimme - eindeutig sein größtes Kapital! - erinnert dabei auch immer wieder gerne an Randy Newman, Billy Joel, Delbert McClinton, Randall Bramblett oder gar an Gary Brooker von Procol Harum.

Lost Keys ist eine Eigenproduktion von Ben Arnold und wurde in verschiedenen Studios im Großraum Philadelphia aufgenommen. Zur Basisband um den singenden und Klavier und Fender Rhodes spielenden Hauptakteur gehören Hooters-Mastermind Eric Bazilian und Matt Kass an den elektrischen Gitarren, Phil D'Agostino am Bass und US Rails-Drummer Matt Muir. Nahezu alle Stücke wurden danach mit üppigen Streichern, Bläsersection und typischem Philly-Backgroundchor ausgeschmückt, dazu erhalten viele aus der Szene bekannte Kollegen wie Scott Bricklin, Zach Djanikian und Kevin Hanson kleinere und größere Gastrollen. Am Ende siegt aber immer diese Wahnsinnsstimme von Ben Arnold!

For 25 years singer-songwriter-keyboarder Ben Arnold has been a mainstay on the bustling Philadelphia scene. His career is built on numerous talents: He is a versatile team player in a number of successful bands and a strong solo artist. Over here, we know him mainly as one of the leaders of the mini-super group US Rails which has been touring and releasing albums on Blue Rose Records for six years now. As a solo artist, he has accumulated a back catalogue of seven albums. His last one, Simplify, was his solo debut on Blue Rose and his strongest outing so far. With US Rails taking a breather, he is releasing the follow-up - Lost Keys.

Ben Arnold's career can be traced back to the early 90s when he was gigging in Philadelphia's coffee house & club scene with his buddy Joseph Parsons and self-releasing his first album (Soar, 1993). With his strong sandpaper voice and wide musical range between Randy Newman, John Hiatt and Bruce Springsteen he became interesting to major labels - his next album Almost Speechless was released in the fall of 1995 on Columbia. Even though it was a professionally produced pop-rock mainstream album, it did not succeed commercially and Arnold retreated into the indie world where he subsequently released the albums In Case I'm Gone Tomorrow (1999), Calico (2004), Solo (2006) and Never Mind My Blues (2007). The Philly-songwriter power pack of 4 Way Street with its focus on CSNY-like harmony-driven folk-rock-pop caused quite a stir. It brought him back together with Joseph Parsons and colleagues Jim Boggia and Scott Bricklin. As a session musician, Arnold also played on albums by Joseph Parsons and Tom Gillam. With drummer Matt Muir he had already collaborated in the indie-rock band Pistol For Ringo. All of these connections led to the US Rails project with fellow songwriters Parsons, Gillam and Bricklin and a slew of releases and European tours. Arnold stands out as the pianist with the immensely listenable sandpaper voice whose contributions are among the highlights of US Rails' output.

Lost Keys is Ben Arnold's 8th solo album presenting a complex, convincing set of 10 songs ranging from blue-eyed soul and piano rock to eastcoast-style blue collar rock with ingredients from blues, funk and Memphis pop. This is a mature, relaxed collection oozing experience and musical know-how with its positive groovy vibe. The artist describes Lost Keys as an homage to the golden years of Motown, Stax, Philly soul and doo wop - indeed! Songs like the opener "Stupid Love" or "One Heart" with their lush orchestral arrangements recall a River-era Springsteen, 60s Tamla Motown beat and the dancefloor atmosphere of 70s Philly sound at the same time. The funky "Cannonball" and the energetic "Detroit People" could have been sung by Joe Cocker in the 80s, "Freedom" is beautiful crooner soul pop not unlike Michael McDonald and the closing number "When Love Fades Away" has the groovy DNA of a classic Hall & Oates hit. Ben Arnold's voice is clearly his strongest asset, at times evoking comparisons to Randy Newman, Billy Joel, Delbert McClinton, Randall Bramblett or even Procol Harum's Gary Brooker.

Lost Keys was produced by Ben Arnold and recorded in various studios in the greater Philly area. The basic band consists of the piano and Fender Rhodes-playing protagonist, Hooters mastermind Eric Bazilian and Matt Kass on electric guitars, Phil D'Agostino on bass and US Rails drummer Matt Muir. Most songs feature strings, horns and/or a typical Philly backing chorus. Additionally colleagues like Scott Bricklin, Zach Djanikian and Kevin Hanson are cast in supporting roles. But Ben Arnold's amazing voice always takes front and center stage!
