Wilder Side

(Songwriter/Country Rock/Country/Roots) 2016 Continental Song City - das ist eine jener Platten, die sofort klicken, die gleich beim ersten Song, bei den ersten Akkorden ein Feeling ausstrahlen, das einen regelrecht gefangen nimmt und bis zum Ende nach gut 40 Minuten nicht mehr loslassen wird! Carter Sampson kommt aus der echten Red Dirt-Szene von Oklahoma (OK City), hat also nichts mit dieser leider mittlerweile gerne zur sterilen Massenmarke verkommenen Red Dirt-Mode am Hut, und veröffentlicht immerhin schon seit 2004 eigene Alben: 3 volle und eine EP - und jetzt dazu ihr Meisterwerk bis dato! Sampson besitzt eine wundervolle Stimme, sehr countryhaft, aber mit interessanten Ecken und Kanten (etwa zwischen Kelly Willis und Lydia Loveless) für die jeweilige Stimmung ihrer ganz ausgezeichneten 10 Songs, die da wie kleine Americana-Kurzfilme daherkommen und ihrem selbstbewusst betitelten Songverlag ("Queen Of Oklahoma") zur Ehre gereichen: 'Highway Rider', 'Medicine River', 'Wild Bird', 'See The Devil Run'… - wegen der sagenhaft relaxten Grundatmosphäre sogar eher eine musikalische Reise nach Kalifornien als ins eigentlich szeneaffinere Texas. Das besonders dank der instrumentellen und studiotechnischen Arbeit von Multitalent Travis Linville, dem "Godfather of modern Oklahoma Folk", der bereits mit John Fullbright, Parker Millsap, Jimmy LaFave, Hayes Carll und den Turnpike Troubadours gearbeitet hat. Er hat diese Sessions in Norman, OK aufgenommen und spielt alle erdenklichen akustischen und elektrischen Gitarren, Pedal Steel, Dobro, Banjo, Bass, Drums und Percussion im Alleingang, ergänzt von wenigen Studiogästen für weitere Gitarren, Keyboards und Backing Vocals (u.a. John Moreland!). Voll überzeugend!!

The album, which is slated for an official release on Jan. 12, 2016, features 10 original compositions, and marks her second collaboration with producer Travis Linville. Other musicians making guest appearances on the album include fellow Oklahomans John Moreland, Ali Harter, Ryan Jones, Gabriel Mor and Joe Mack. Andy Adams and Denise Cullen also helped co-write two of the albums songs, “Everything You Need” and “Medicine River”, respectively.
As its title alludes, Wilder Side is a no-holds-barred showcase of songs written from behind the windshield, over the road, inside the bottle, and from the heart. The title cut proves the possessor of such an angelic voice is not invincible with her bleeding, beating heart. Other songs offer different perspectives, like the unhinged joy of the unknown in “Run Away”, or the vulnerable surrender of the solemn “Take Me Home With You”. The album’s closer, “See the Devil Run”, is an autobiographical account inspired by a visit to the Rev. Al Green’s church in Memphis for Sunday services, which no doubt had the demons dashing for the doors. While the themes explored on Wilder Side have been covered by Sampson and her predecessors before, it’s her stark realization and buttery translation of the experiences themselves in such a sheer, accessible and memorable way that will propel the songstress to the front of the craft’s conversation.
