"Ich war verrückt nach Musik" - so erinnert sich Joe Camilleri an die Zeit, als er anfing, in Bands zu spielen. "Ich war an nichts anderem interessiert. Ich habe Musik gelebt, geatmet und gegessen." 49 Alben später - Citizen John ist sein 21. mit den Black Sorrows - und Camilleri's Leidenschaft ist, falls möglich, größer als je zuvor. Mit seinem langjährigen Songwriting-Partner NIck Smith arbeitet er fast täglich an neuen Songs. Auf die Frage nach seinem Lieblingssong in seinem großen Katalog antwortet er augenzwinkernd: "Der nächste."

Sicher hat er eine unglaubliche Zahl an Zielen in seiner über 50-jährigen Karriere als Sänger, Songwriter, Musiker, Performer und Produzent auf der Höhe seiner Schaffenskunst erreicht. Als Frontmann der bahnbrechenden 70er-Jahre-Band JoJo Zep & The Falcons wurde Joe 2007 in die Hall Of Fame der australischen Musik (ARIA) aufgenommen. Mit den Black Sorrows hatte er Hits nicht nur in Australien, sondern auch in Europa. Dank mehrerer Tourneen haben sich Songs wie "Chained to the Wheel", "Harley & Rose" und "Hold On To Me" im Radio etabliert. Die Band hatte 1990 den ARIA-Preis für die beste Band gewonnen, 2015 war Endless Sleep als eines der besten Blues & Roots-Alben nominiert - die insgesamt 19. Nominierung der Band. Nach 20 Jahren kehrten die Black Sorrows 2015 nach Skandinavien zurück, um Endless Sleep auf Tour vorzustellen. Das Album erreichte 2015 Rang 13 in den EuroAmericana Charts.

Die Band hat mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichnete Alben veröffentlicht sowie weltweit über zwei Millionen Alben verkauft. Die Black Sorrows haben, seit sie von Joe 1983 zusammengestellt wurden, nie aufgehört zu touren oder im Studio zu arbeiten. Noch immer spielt er über 150 Shows pro Jahr - seine Energie scheint unerschöpflich ebenso wie die Leidenschaft und Hingabe, mit der er jeden Song, jede Platte und jeden Auftritt angeht.

Immer schon ein produktiver Songschreiber, brachte Camilleri diesmal wieder mehr als genügend Songs mit ins Studio, von denen am Ende zehn Originale sowie drei Covers (Bob Dylan's "Silvio", Nina Simone's "Do I Move You" sowie das Traditional "Sitting On Top Of The World") auf Citizen John landeten, die alle Genres abdecken, die Joe als Schreiber und Musikliebhaber über die Jahre inspiriert haben. Das Album ist wie eine Feier und Reise durch die lebendigsten Musikstile des 20. Jahrhunderts und trägt zugleich eindeutig die Handschrift von Joe Camilleri. "Ich habe mein Netz schon immer weit ausgeworfen", sagt er. Warum auch nicht? Schließlich bleibt es dadurch spannend - für den Künstler wie für sein Publikum. "Und das ist eine vielseitige, klasse Rockband!" Gemeinsam liefern sie eine fantastische Mischung ab, die Gospel, Zydeco, Reggae, Texas Swing, Old-School R&B, Soul, Dub und noch viel mehr auf einem großen, selbstbewussten, stets beseelten Album zusammenbringt.

"Ich bin mit Haut und Haaren dabei", sagt Joe, das sei schon immer so gewesen. "Ich will immer weitermachen." Und wir alle sind eingeladen, mitzukommen und die Fahrt zu genießen. Man weiß nie, was sich hinter der nächsten Kurve verbirgt - aber sicherlich weiß Joe schon, wo die Reise hingeht und hat bereits einiges davon niedergeschrieben.

Citizen John - The Black Sorrows' 21st album - sits comfortably alongside the band's finest work, including multi-platinum classics such as Harley and Rose and Hold On To Me. Albums that achieved considerable chart success both in their home country of Australia and in Europe.

The album showcases The Black Sorrows' sophisticated brand of soulful, bluesy roots music and production prowess. Joe wrote the record with his long-time compadre Nick Smith. The 10 original songs are complemented by covers of Bob Dylan's underrated pop gem 'Silvio' and Nina Simone's 'Do I Move You?' plus an original arrangement of a traditional number 'Sitting On Top Of The World'.

Citizen John comes nearly 35 years after Joe started The Black Sorrows at Melbourne's Café Neon. Since then, the band has graced concert stages around the world, including building a passionate following in Europe, where Citizen John is released on the German label Blue Rose Records.
Highlights include 'Lover I Surrender' - one of the Sorrows' finest love songs - and 'Brother Moses', a life-affirming dose of playful blues, which sees Joe singing, "You can dance in your dreams, and trouble seems to leave your weary head."

The Black Sorrows are one of Australia's most consistent and best-loved bands, having sold more than two million albums and won an ARIA Award for Best Group. Joe Camilleri was inducted into the ARIA Music Hall of Fame in 2007 with Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, preceding the Sorrows' inevitable induction.
Citizen John - which follows the Sorrows' 2016 critically acclaimed album, Faithful Satellite - is Joe's 49th career album. But these are just numbers to Joe, who remains ageless. And his music is timeless. "Tomorrow ain't ever coming 'round," Joe sings in 'Wednesday's Child', one of the many standout songs on Citizen John and a reminder that Camilleri and his bandmates were the gateway drug for roots music aficionados in Australia.

It could be The Black Sorrows' mantra - this is a band that's always living in the moment, focused on the latest record and the next performance, forever evolving and refusing to trade on past glories. Citizen John - a Living Legend, according to Rolling Stone - remains at the top of his game.
