Reunion-Alben sind meist durchwachsen. Dieses Album markiert jedoch die erste Aufnahmesession der Honeydogs mit ihrer Originalbesetzung – Adam Levy, Noah Levy, Trent Norton und Tommy Borscheid – seit 28 Jahren. Es vereint die ungestüme Energie der frühen Bandjahre mit ausgefeilterem Songwriting und bietet eine Vielfalt an Stilen und Stimmungen. Und wie schon „Back to California“ von 20/20 ist es ein voller Erfolg. Die Honeydogs besetzen die seltene Lücke zwischen Alternative Country und Indie-Rock und kreieren so einen unverwechselbaren Sound mit vielfältigen Einflüssen.
Der Opener des Albums, „Attic Brain“, besticht durch ein kraftvolles Riff im Stil von Led Zeppelin. Der Titel spielt auf „addict brain“ (süchtiges Gehirn) an und reflektiert persönliche Probleme. Mit den bluesigen Akustikklängen von „I Don’t Wanna Fight“ schlägt das Album einen anderen Ton an, bevor es mit dem eingängigen Rocker „Kill Switch“ wieder richtig losgeht – eine großartige Single, die im Ohr bleibt. Der melodische Titeltrack sinniert traumhaft über den Lauf der Zeit und die Komplexität des Daseins. Weitere Highlights sind das Glam-Rock-Country-Stück „Captain“ und „Irish Goodbye“, das sich mit drogenbedingten, dysfunktionalen Beziehungen auseinandersetzt; es klingt wie eine Mischung aus Cheap Trick und Motown. Ohne jeglichen Schnickschnack ist dies ein fantastisches Album, das hoffentlich den Beginn neuer Aufnahmen einläutet. Absolut empfehlenswert.

However, this album marks the Honeydogs’ first recording session with their original lineup of Adam Levy, Noah Levy, Trent Norton, and Tommy Borscheid in 28 years. It’s a blend of the band’s early scrappy energy and more refined songwriting, with a variety of styles and moods. And, like 20/20’s ‘Back to California’, a complete success. The Honeydogs occupy the rare gap between alt. country and indie rock, creating a distinct sound with a multitude of influences.
The album’s opening track, “Attic Brain,” features a powerful Led Zeppelin-esque riff, and the title is a play on “addict brain” and reflects on personal issues. It changes tone to the bluesy acoustic strums of “I Don’t Wanna Fight,” and snaps back with the catchiest rocker here “Kill Switch,” it’s a terrific single that really sticks. The melodic title track has a dreamlike contemplation of the ebb and flow of time and the intricacies of existence. Other highlights include the glam-rock meets country “Captain”and “Irish Goodbye,” which delves into issues of drug-fueled dysfunctional relationships; it sounds like a cross between Cheap Trick and Motown. With no fluff whatsoever, this is a fantastic album that, with any luck, will signal the beginning of new recordings. Highly Recommended.
