Lost 'til Dawn

Und am Bass… Scott Bricklin. So haben wir ihn hier bei uns vor etlichen Jahren kennengelernt: zunächst in diversen Begleitbands von Joseph Parsons, später als festes Mitglied bei der kleinen Supergroup US Rails. Spätestens dort präsentierte er sich neben den bereits arrivierten Herren Parsons, Ben Arnold und Tom Gillam aber auch als ebenbürtiger Partner in Sachen Leadgesang und Songwriting! In 2011 debütierte Scott Bricklin mit einem ersten eigenen, selbstbetitelten Album nach so langer Zeit als Teamplayer in der Philadelphia-Szene. Jetzt legt der mit unzähligen Session- und Studiojobs dauerengagierte Musiker endlich sein nächstes, mit Spannung erwartetes Solowerk vor: Lost 'Til Dawn besitzt all die Kraft eines richtig gut gemachten Rock/Pop-Albums mit Songcharakter von völlig zeitloser Qualität etwa zwischen den Bausteinen Beatles, Stones und Tom Petty. Und… ja, er spielt auch Bass, aber das ist nur eine Randnotiz, denn wir erleben hier Scott Bricklin einmal mehr als absolutes Allroundtalent vom Songschreiben bis zum finalen Mixing!

Bricklin ist ein Musiker mit Vergangenheit als Multiinstrumentalist, Produzent, Recording Engineer, Sänger und Songwriter. Mit seinem Bruder Brian spielte er in der 80er Philadelphia-Kultband Bricklin, dann lange bei Martin's Dam, tourte viel mit Joseph Parsons, begleitete die Figgs und Graham Parker, gehörte u.a. mit Parsons und Arnold zu der an hochkarätigen Vorbildern wie Buffalo Springfield und CSNY ausgrichteten Formation 4 Way Street. Seit Mitte der 2000er lebt er in Paris, arbeitet hauptsächlich mit den gerade in Europa enorm beliebten US Rails zusammen und schiebt ab und an eine kleine eigene Tour dazwischen. Bereits sein 2011er Solodebüt begeisterte mit 12 Ohrwurmnummern und einschmeichelnd angerockten Acoustic/Electric-Balladen, Lost 'Til Dawn ist jetzt der konsequente Nachfolger!

Mit dem rockigen Opener 'Fire On Fire' mit Stones-Gitarren und markantem Refrain startet Scott Bricklin ein facettenreiches, vielschichtig gestaltetes Programm von kraftvollen Rocksongs, eingängigen Popmelodien, sämigen Balladen und subtilem Acoustic Folk. So erinnert der funky/swampy Slide Guitar Rocker 'Maybe Less Than Before' an Little Feat, 'On The Rock' ist locker dahingleitender, semiakustischer Country Rock mit sanfter Gitarre im George Harrison-Stil und der Titelsong 'Lost 'Til Dawn' ein fetziger, offensiver Rocker mit klasse Riffs und extrovertierten Shouter Vocals. Auf den akustischen Folk Pop von 'Let Me Go' folgt mit 'Babyshoes' druckvoller Rock/Pop à la späte 'Abbey Road'-Beatles mit einem Hauch von Eric Clapton-Guitarwork. Für die total auf Harmonie und Melodie basierende Ballade 'The Ferry' beweist Scott Bricklin sein Talent als gefühlvoller blue-eyed Soul Crooner, andere Tracks wie 'The Other Side' und 'Make A Lotta Love' bieten Gitarrenrock mit Tom Petty-Qualitäten zwischen dem verträumten Folksong 'Goldtown' und der behutsam aufgebauten Tiefgangballade 'I Would', die sich zum heimlichen Sleeper Hit dieses famosen Albums entwickeln könnte!

Scott Bricklin singt durchweg mit sympathisch rauer, gewohnt wandlungsfähiger Stimme und spielt verschiedene Gitarren, Mandoline, Banjo, Klavier, Orgel, Bass, Drums und Percussion. Er hat alle 12 Titel geschrieben, produziert, aufgenommen und abgemischt, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den beiden ebenfalls in Paris lebenden Rockmusikern Felix Beguin (Gitarren, Keyboards, Backing Vocals, Co-Produktion) und Jeremy Norris (Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals), hauptberuflich bei den angesagten Bands Burnin' Jacks und Velvet Veins. Drummer Matt Muir von den US Rails ist auf einer Nummer als Gast dabei. Da kommt dann eben doch wieder der vollkommen uneitle Teamplayer in Scott Bricklin zum Vorschein!

And on bass … Scott Bricklin. That is how we first heard of him many years ago in Europe: First as Joseph Parsons's sideman, later on as a member of the mini-super group US Rails. And he proved himself to be the equal of more established artists like Parsons, Ben Arnold and Tom Gillam, sharing songwriting and lead vocal duties. 2011 saw the release of Bricklin's solo debut after many years as a team player on the Philadelphia scene. Now, the in-demand session and studio musician releases the much-awaited follow-up: Lost 'Til Dawn, his second solo outing, is a real fine rock-pop album with strong songs and a timeless quality derived from the building blocks Beatles, Stones and Tom Petty. And, yes, he also plays the bass but the focus is on Scott Bricklin as a multi-talented musician handling everything from songwriting to vocals and the album mix.

Bricklin is an artist with a history as multi-instrumentalist, producer, recording engineer, singer and songwriter. With his brother Brian he played in the 80s Philly group Bricklin, then joined Martin's Dam, toured extensively with Joseph Parsons, backed up the Figgs and Graham Parker and - along with Parsons and Arnold - was a member of 4 Way Street, a band modeled after CSNY and Buffalo Springfield. Since the mid-2000s he has been living in Paris, working a lot with US Rails who are very popular in Europe and every now and then he plays his own shows. His 2011 solo debut offered twelve catchy tracks in a semi-acoustic rocking style and Lost 'Til Dawn is the logical follow-up.

With the rocking opener 'Fire On Fire' with its Stonesy guitars and a strong chorus, Scott Bricklin starts out a diversified album full of meaty rockers, catchy pop melodies, enchanting ballads and subtle acoustic folk. The swampy, slide-driven rocker 'Maybe Less Than Before' has a Little Feat vibe. 'On The Rock' is a smooth, semi-acoustic country rocker a la George Harrison while the album's title track is a driving rocker with great riffs and strong shouter vocals. Following the acoustic folk-pop of 'Let Me Go' is 'Babyshoes', a pop-rocker reminiscent of Abbey Road-Beatles with a touch of Clapton guitar. In the beautifully melodious ballad 'The Ferry', Scott Bricklin comes across as a very competent soul crooner. Other tracks like 'The Other Side' and 'Make A Lotta Love' offer up guitar rock Tom Petty-style while between the dreamy folkie song 'Goldtown' and the carefully built ballad 'I Would' the great album's sleeper hit may be hidden.

Scott Bricklin's vocals have a likeable rough edge yet are very versatile. He also plays numerous guitars, mandolin, banjo, piano, organ, bass, drums and percussion. He wrote, produced, recorded and mixed all the album's twelve tracks together with his Paris musician friends Felix Beguin (guitars, keys, backing vocals, co-producer) and Jeremy Norris (drums, percussion, backing vocals). US Rails drummer Matt Muir guests on one song - proving that once again Scott Bricklin is a vanity-free team player.
