Vom druckvoll-singenden Opener 'Coming From The Grave' geht's über das schleppende 'On Your Way Home' direkt zum Ohrwurmrefrain von 'White Vinyl'.

THE SILOS, one of the biggest bands of indie/alt.Americana/pop, are celebrating their ten-year anniversary on Blue Rose Records with a brand-new studio album. Florizona - that album title alone embodies freshness and imagination! And it represents two things: a bravado comeback after a not-so-short recording hiatus and the absolute certainty that Walter Salas-Humara is not running out of songwriting ideas. Wonderful news indeed!

The Silos from New York were a mid-80ies critics' darlings-type band ahead of its time and therefore not being able to sell their eminently influential music in the deserved quantities - much like the Velvet Underground, Television, The Feelies, Green On Red or even the later-period Byrds. The Silos stood for smart, sensitive, catchy American indie pop-goes-alt.country rock of the very finest order. About Her Steps (1985), Cuba (87) and Silos (90) all gained rave reviews and numerous year-end best mentions by the fashionable rock magazines. Their simple masterpiece Cuba remains unforgotten and still gets lavish praise in countless "top rock history" polls and charts.

The 90ies were strongly influenced by Silos-mastermind Walter Salas-Humara's restlessness and desire to experiment. After moving to Austin and releasing the wonderful Hasta La Victoria and Diablo (aka Susan Across The Ocean) in 92/94, he formed the Setters with Alejandro Escovedo and Michael Hall, made solo records, played with Vulgar Boatmen, Willard Grant Conspiracy and Hazeldine, reactivated The Silos in various configurations and followed new musical paths on 98's Healer (and its counterpart Cooler).

Amid all this flurry of activity the Silos' unique spirit got lost and overlooked in the emerging alt.country/No Depression/Americana boom. All of a sudden, The Silos were but one band among many and had to reestablish themselves. This happened in the new millennium after moving back to Brooklyn and signing with Blue Rose. With the albums Laser Beam Next Door (01), When The Telephone Rings (04) and Come On Like The Fast Lane (06) and a consistent band personnel featuring bassist/multi-instrumentalist Drew Glackin and drummer Konrad Meissner, they established themselves as a reliable major force on the label.

However, The Silos suffered a terrible shock when Drew Glackin passed away from a heart attack unexpectedly and much too young at age 44 in early 2008. Salas-Humara and Meissner didn't give up on their band but they did pare it down to select live dates and didn't feel up to working on new songs for awhile. Salas-Humara kept himself busy on a project with literary sensation Jonathan Lethem combining rock'n'roll with spoken word/poetry, electronica and hiphop as "I'm Not Jim" on the album You Are All My People.

And now 2011 sees the return of The Silos! With a new band and a return to their musical roots, their 10th studio album Florizona certainly sounds like they've experienced a creative rejuvenation. The album's 10 new songs, all of them collaborations by Walter Salas-Humara with friends and comrades, are full of strong melodies, rock'n'roll energy, driving guitars and a rich sound never before heard on a Silos album. Salas-Humara who has been known to play every instrument can now focus on being the front man, lead singer and guitarist. The versatile Rod Hohl (ex-Mary Lee's Corvette) takes over the bass from Drew Glackin and adds guitars, dobro, lap steel and a producer credit to his resume. Konrad Meissner is back behind the drum kit but keyboarder Bruce Martin (like Glackin an ex-member of Tandy) and particularly guitar wizard Jason Victor (Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3) give the band a whole new sound.

And there is also a host of guest musicians: Guitarists Whit Williams (Cotton Mather), Dan Wilson (Semisonic), Mike Hoffmann (Semi-Twang) and Gary Sunshine (Silos-Familie), Ex-Wild Seeds Randy Franklin on mandolin, Michelle Anthony on keyboards and harmony vocals, Amy Allison as extra vocalist on four numbers and Walter's brother Charlie Salas-Humara on cello on album closer "The Ring Of Trees". The complex transparency of Florizona is reminiscent of R.E.M., Wilco or The Minus5. From the driving opener "Coming From The Grave" over the heavy swagger of "On Your Way Home" to the catchy chorus of "White Vinyl". Equally strong are the folk psychedelia of "Gravity", the straight-ahead rock of "Teenage Prayer", the rootsy "Hold You In My Arms" and "Getting Trashed" with its riff borrowed from "Losing My Religion". "Election Day" is one of those great Silos ballads!

With this truly amazing quality album, Walter Salas-Humara and The Silos have fortified their status as one of the defining bands on the independent sector and a darling of the alt-Americana/No Depression scene.
