BENJI HUGHES sagt: "Wenn ich an meinen Liedern arbeite, fühle ich mich einfach gut. Es zieht mich einfach immer dahin zurück. Und mal ehrlich: Wenn es kein Spaß machen würde, wieso sollte ich mich immer wieder dransetzen?" Seine Musik ist so wild wie sein anmutiges Äußeres. Unter seiner dicken blonden Mähne und über seinem wilden Bart saugt er alle möglichen Einflüße in sich auf - von The Crystals, Merle Haggard und Kinky Friedman zu den Talking Heads, The Cars, den Scott Walker, Beatles und Slayer - und kreiert etwas, was an einen jungen, sich austobenden Beck, an den Badly Drawn Boy oder gar an Weezer ("Tight Tee Shirt") erinnert.

Nachdem sich Hughes in L.A. einen Namen gemacht hatte, nahm ihn Keefus Ciancia (T-Bone Burnett, Sheryl Crow, Everlast) an die Hand. Gemeinsam zauberte das Paar in vier Monaten A Love Extreme herbei. Instant-Classic! White Album! Leonard Cohen! Randy Newman! Hier und jetzt und in jung! Ruhe bewahren. Doch Ciancia bestätigt: "So wie Benji an den Melodien arbeitet, wie er schreibt, er findet damit einen Weg und schleicht sich in Deinen Kopf. So wie er schreibt, so lebt er. Abgefahren, wie er am Piano in eine Trance fällt. Er setzt sich hin, Du denkst: Vollsuff! Doch seine Hände bewegen sich einfach wie von allein. Ganz natürlich. Dazu ist er noch ein Genie an der Gitarre. Was er da auf A Love Extreme spielt, ist komplett außer Kontrolle". So kann es gehen.

Letztendlich sind es aber seine Texte, die Hughes wirklich von der Masse abheben. Genies an der Gitarre, Trinker am Piano - haben wir alle schon gesehen. Wer aber legt so viel Wert auf die langweiligen Details, ehe am Ende doch nichts passiert? "You had a date with me, on April 17th / I showed up at the Dairy Queen / Where we were supposed to meet. I got there at 4.53, we were supposed to meet me at 5 / I had a Butterfinger Blizzard and some fries", singt er in "You Stood Me Up".

"A lot of talking I can't remember the next day, sometimes number are exchanged. If you ever should decide to call you can't match the numbers with the names. By the way when is the time to go home? Tonight Im gonna pass out alone. Why do these parties always end the same way? We need to call the cops somebody killed the DJ"

Nicht alles ist schlecht im Leben dieses sympathischen Verlierers. Er steckt zwar mitten in der Post-Millenium-Single-Misere, die Parties sind mies, der DJ wird umgebracht. Aber später auf dem Flaming Lips-Konzert hält er endich SEIN Mädchen im Arm und hat eine gute Zeit. Ciancia berichtet aus eigener Erfahrung: "Benji nahm mich mit auf meine erste Flaming Lips-Show. Als er mich abholte, trug er ein Hasen-Kostüm. Ich so: "Whoa, was machst Du da?" und er: "Vertrau mir!". So fuhren wir zum Konzert. Dort angekommen, verschwand er gleich. Und viel später sah ich ihn mit den anderen Tieren auf der Bühne!". "Was soll es, ich bin einfach ehrlich zu mir selbst", sagt Hughes. Verdammt charmanter Kerl, der da aus dem Nichts ein erstaunliches Doppel-Album abliefert.

Blue Rose-verwöhnte Ohren sollten allerdings gewarnt sein: Das von unserem US-Partner New West Records veröffentlichte Debüt von BENJI HUGHES hat aber auch gar nichts mit dem zu tun, was wir (und das gilt auch überwiegend für die New West-Kollegen) so üblicherweise auf die Musikliebhaber loslassen. Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, Benji Hughes spends much of his time masterminding his blend of inventive rock and ballads. At times earnest, at others whimsical, Benji is equally adept at keyboards and guitar. He loves beer but he loves women even more. Underneath his thick mane of strawberry blond hair and beard is a versatile singer/songwriter, full of heart. His music collection -- spanning everything from The Crystals, Merle Haggard, and Kinky Friedman to Talking Heads, The Cars, and Slayer -- is as wild as his gracious exterior.

Producer and L.A- bred session musician Keefus Ciancia (T-Bone Burnett, Sheryl Crow, Everlast) assisted Hughes in making his 25-song debut album in his Los Feliz, CA studio. A Love Extreme flows like your favorite mixtape but with the classicality of Randy Newman and Leonard Cohen. Ciancia doesn’t hesitate to champion Hughes’ genuine approach to his artistic craft. “The way he writes lyrics and melodies, Benji finds a way to get into your brain. The way he does things is the way he lives his life. On the piano, he’s freaky because he just sits down and gets into this trance mode. It’s like a beer coma and his hands just kind of take off. It’s just kind of natural to him. He’s an amazing guitar player, too. He did most of the guitar stuff on A Love Extreme. It’s totally out of control.”

Whether he’s gushing about women and relationships or pining over heartbreaks, Hughes has a penchant for perfecting great pop songs. From the danceable “Tight Tee Shirt” to the synth-slathered vibe of “Why Do These Parties Always End the Same Way” and “Baby, It’s Your Life!” Hughes’ barefaced humor is instantaneously charming. Even during the more dour moments such as the melancholic “Love Is a Razor” and the majestic, piano-driven “Even If,” Hughes nails it each and every time.

“[Songwriting] is something that makes me feel good. I just gravitate to it,” Hughes says. “It’s just me being honest with myself. If it wasn’t something fun, I wouldn’t be doing it.”

Other standouts include ballad “All You’ve Got to Do Is Fall in Love,” the ‘70s-singed riffage of “Vibe So Hot,” and the old school hip-hop flavors of “Ladies on Parade.” “I Went With Some Friends to See the Flaming Lips” is another automatic classic-in-themaking, and something Ciancia can personally talk about it.

“Benji took me to my first Flaming Lips show and he showed up to my house in a bunny suit,” Ciancia says. “I was like, ‘Whoa, what are we doing?’ He was like, ‘Just trust me,’ and we drove to the Palladium. Once we got there, he just took off. But later on I saw him on stage dancing with the rest of the animals.”
