Blackbirds

(Songwriter/Folk/Country Rock/Roots) 2015 Scarlet Letter - manchmal verliert man einen Künstler aus den Augen, obwohl es dafür kein wirkliches musikalisches Motiv gibt. So ist mir das mit der grundguten, stimmkräftigen und songprägnanten Singer/Songwriterin Gretchen Peters aus Nashville vor ca. 10 Jahren passiert. Ihre ersten Alben von 1996 bis 2005 hatte ich noch mit Freude gehört, auch ihre wunderschönen Duettbeiträge auf manchen Tom Russell-Platten als Bereicherung empfunden. Und dann? Steige ich anlässlich ihres brandneuen, in Americana-Zirkeln extrem positiv aufgenommenen Albums 'Blackbird' endlich wieder ein. Und das ist schon mal klar: Wenn die "verschmähten" CDs dazwischen nur halb so gut sind wie die neue, dann gibt's erstmal richtig Nachholbedarf!! Co-produziert von Peters, ihrem langjährigen Keyboarder, dem Sessionmann Barry Walsh (Tom Russell, Waylon Jennings, Nanci Griffith), und Luxusgitarrist Doug Lancio (John Hiatt, Patty Griffin, Matthew Ryan, Holly Williams) begibt sich die mit einer ganz besonderen Stimme gesegnete Musikerin auf eine ganz eigenständige, untrendige, angenehm "analog" klingende Americana-Reise zwischen Folk, Country mit hohem Balladenanteil, aber auch kernigen Roots Rock-Elementen darunter. Bis auf David Mead's 'Nashville' hat sie alle Titel selber (z.T. co-) geschrieben und mit einer festen Studioband der Extraklasse eingespielt: Doug Lancio (Gitarren und andere Saiteninstrumente), Will Kimbrough (dto.), Barry Walsh (Piano, Orgel, Akkordion), Dave Roe (Bass) und Nick Buda (Drums); dazu Jerry Douglas (Dobro), David Henry (Cello), Mickey Raphael (Harmonica) und die nicht ganz unbekannten Gesangspartner Kim Richey, Jimmy LaFave, David Mead, Suzy Bogguss, Matraca Berg und Jason Isbell. Von vorne bis hinten voll überzeugendes Teil, das seine Spuren vielleicht sogar bis in den Herbst zu den Americana Music Awards hinterlassen wird!!

Fresh from her induction into the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Gretchen Peters unveils her new album 'Blackbirds.' Co-produced with Doug Lancio and Barry Walsh and recorded in Nashville, the album features a who's who of modern American roots music: Jerry Douglas, Jason Isbell, Jimmy LaFave, Will Kimbrough, Kim Richey, Suzy Bogguss and more. But it's not the guests that make 'Blackbirds' the most poignant and moving album of the GRAMMY-nominee's storied career; it’s the impeccable craftsmanship, her ability to capture the kind of complex, conflicting, and overwhelming emotional moments we might otherwise try to hide and instead shine a light of truth and understanding onto them. In an atypical and unexpectedly rewarding move, Peters teamed with frequent tour-mate Ben Glover to co-write several tunes on the new album, which evokes the kind of 1970's folk rock of Neil Young, David Crosby, and Joni Mitchell that Peters grew up on, albeit with a more haunted, country-noir vibe simmering just below the surface. 'Blackbirds' follows Peters' 2012 album 'Hello Cruel World,' which NPR called "the album of her career" and Uncut said "establishes her as the natural successor to Lucinda Williams." If anything, though, 'Blackbirds' truly establishes Peters as a one-of-a-kind singer and songwriter, one in possession of a fearless and endlessly creative voice.
