Der populäre Americana & Guitar Rock-Allrounder Tom Gillam gehört zu der Gruppe von US-Musikern mit heißen Drähten nach Europa. Kaum ein Jahr vergeht, in dem der sympathische Wahltexaner nicht bei uns auf Tour wäre, sei es solo, im Duoformat, mit Bandbegleitung oder im Rahmen der Singer/Songwriter-Supergroup US Rails. Bei so viel Präsenz und dauerhafter Beliebtheit ist die ausreichende Grundversorgung der Fans mit neuem Material natürlich eminent wichtig. Und Tom Gillam liefert! Regelmäßig seit nunmehr fast 20 Jahren, ab 2007 ohne Unterbrechung auf Blue Rose. Beautiful Dream heißt sein brandneues Werk - nach längerer Zeit mal wieder mit ausdrücklicher Banderwähnung auf dem Cover, ein klares Bekenntnis also zum ausgeprägten Teamplay innerhalb der Gillam-typischen Koordinaten 70er Retro Rock, Country Rock und Roots'n Roll zwischen Texas-Grundierung und Westcoast-Atmosphäre.

Als das Blue Rose-Label Tom Gillam 2007 mit seinem 4. Album Never Look Back in Europa einführte, da war er für viele noch der große Unbekannte. Das hat sich vollkommen geändert! Heute steht sein Name als Inbegriff für handgemachte, nachhaltig wertvolle Blue Rose-Kost. Gillam, geboren in New Jersey und musikalisch sozialisiert in der nahen Szene von Philadelphia, debütierte Ende der 90er vielsagend mit dem Album First Of All, gefolgt von Dallas (2001) und Shake My Hand (2004). Ein späterer Sampler, Better Than The Rest, würdigt diesen frühen, noch deutlich im erweiterten Country/Roots Rock/Americana-Bereich befindlichen Stoff. Sein Engagement als Gitarrist in der Band des bekannten Singer/Songwriters Joseph Parsons weckte Mitte des letzten Jahrzehnts die Aufmerksamkeit der Blue Rose-Scouts. Besonders live wusste Tom Gillam durch seine vitale Bühnenpräsenz zu überzeugen - der Grundstein für eine bis auf den heutigen Tag andauernde Freundschaft mit dem schwäbischen Label war gesetzt. Mit Never Look Back und dem fulminanten Live-Mitschnitt Play Loud…Dig Deep von 2008 steuerte er, unterstützt von seiner Band Tractor Pull, auf einen straighteren Rock-Kurs Richtung Mellencamp, Hiatt, Walsh, Seger und baute sein Renommée ein Jahr später mit dem nächsten Studioalbum Had Enough? noch weiter aus.

Inzwischen hatte sich Tom Gillam privat nach Texas orientiert und in der musikalischen Kreativzelle von Austin seine neue Heimat gefunden. Beim beliebten Sender KNBT-FM moderiert er seit vielen Jahren eine erfolgreiche Radio Show, "The Cosmic Power Hour", zudem moderiert er seit bereits über zwei Jahren beim gleichen Sender montags bis freitags die 4-stündige "Americana Morning Show". Seine eigenen Ambitionen verfolgt Gillam seitdem zweigleisig. Mit Joseph Parsons, Ben Arnold, Scott Bricklin und Matt Muir gründete er die beliebten und häufig bei uns tourenden US Rails. Was ursprünglich noch als Klassentreffen alter Philadelphia-Freunde anmutete, entwickelte sich zu einer weiteren veritablen Blue Rose-Größe mit immerhin drei professionellen Studioalben zwischen 2010 und 2013: US Rails, Southern Canon und Heartbreak Superstar. Daneben veröffentlichte er Anfang 2012 das überraschend entspannte und in großen Teilen akustische Rustic Beauty. Ende desselben Jahres fand er für Good For You den goldenen Mittelweg zwischen Midtempo-Balladen der Extraklasse, forschem Country Rock und fetzigeren Nummern auf der elektrischen Seite der Americana-Medaille.

Tom Gillam & The Kozmic Messengers leben auf Beautiful Dream ihre Neigung zum unauslöschlichen Retro Rock-Sound der siebziger Jahre voll aus! Die 10 neuen Tracks, darunter eine sehr ungewöhnliche Wahl als Covernummer einer gar nicht so abwegigen Band…, strotzen vor elektrischer Spielfreude, leidenschaftlichen Vocals und einer Rückbesinnung auf den rockigeren, gitarrenlastigen Sound der Erfolgsplatten Never Look Back und Had Enough?. Das Quartett besteht aus Tom Gillam mit Lead Vocals, an den elektrischen und akustischen Gitarren, etwas Klavier und E-Piano, aber nur einem kurzen Solo an der Slide Guitar. Diesen Job überlässt er diesmal seinem kongenialen Saitenpartner David Spencer aus San Antonio, der zudem Lap Steel und Dobro spielt, sich die Electric Lead Soli mit Gillam teilt und auch als Co-Writer/Sänger fungiert. Dan McCann am Bass, ein echter Veteran der Texas Roots Rock-Geschichte (u.a. Evan Johns & The H-Bombs, Snake Farm, Henry Vestine) und Schlagzeuger Kenn Furr bilden die Rhythm Section, praktisch als 5. Mann spielt Produzent/Soundmann/Mixer Ron Flynt (20/20, Bluehearts, Drakes) an diversen Keyboards von Klavier bis Orgel. Er ist auch verantwortlich für den total analog klingenden und ideal auf diese Musik zugeschnittenen Retrosound.

Das Album beginnt mit einem total rockigen Dreierpack: 'Tell Me What You Want' ist kompakter, von Slide Guitar-Soli und Orgelschüben geprägter 70er Rock à la Joe Walsh, 'Just Don't Feel Like Love' erinnert an späte elektrische Eagles mit James Gang und bietet herrliche Twin Guitar-Passagen. 'Flying Bird' kommt mit dem für Tom Gillam typischen knödeligen Gesang, erstaunt mit einem souligen Backingchor (via Texas Roots-Sängerin Shelley King) und spart nicht mit tollen Lead & Slide Guitar-Duellen! Zur Entschleunigung erleben wir danach auf 'Red Letter Day' kalifornisch dahinfließenden Sonnenuntergangs-Country Rock mit akustischen Gitarren, Klavier und ganz viel Pedal Steel. Und dann… 'Good Day In Hell'! Diese wahrlich seltene Eagles-Covernummer (von On The Border) passt als ungewollte Hommage an den verstorbenen Glenn Frey. Ganz anders das 6-minütige, perfekt betitelte 'Lazy Sunday'. Nach einem langen Intro steuert die Band einen Kurs zwischen dem entspannten Rock'n Roll der Grateful Dead zu Zeiten von American Beauty und den von Dickey Betts geprägten Allman Brothers zur Brothers & Sisters-Phase. Im wahrsten Sinn "kosmisch" nehmen sich dabei die perlenden Gitarrenimprovisationen im Mittelteil aus! 'All About Me' ist ein schnörkelloser "fast & furios" Rocker auf Blues-Basis mit überraschendem Saxofon-Intermezzo (von Steve Bernstein) zwischen all der Lead & Slide Guitar Power und 'Better Things To Do' überzeugt als Blues-lastiger Rock'n Roll mit funky Grooves. Nach dem kurzen Acoustic Guitar-Instrumental 'DnG' von David Spencer endet Beautiful Dream mit der 5-Minuten-Langsamballade 'Sail Away' - fast schon eine veritable Rockhymne von Gillam & Spencer, bei der sich beide mit Lead Vocals abwechseln und auf akustischen Gitarren spielen. Delikat ausstaffiert mit Electric Piano, Dobro, Klavier und Orgel sorgt dieses Stück für ein recht spaciges Ende: bestens geeignet für KNBT-FM und "The Cosmic Power Hour"!

The popular Americana and guitar-rock all-rounder Tom Gillam is one of those US musicians with strong ties to Europe. There's hardly a year in which the likeable musician does not tour Europe - be it solo, in a duo format, with his band or as a member of singer-songwriter super group US Rails. With him coming over so frequently, having new material to present is of great importance. And Gillam delivers in spades! In 20 years Tom Gillam has been releasing albums regularly, since 2007 without fail on Blue Rose. Beautiful Dream is the title of his new album. For the first time in a while, the band gets special mention in the booklet - a strong indication of the strong team play within Gillam's coordinates of 70s retro rock, country rock and roots'n'roll with Texas roots and a Westcoast vibe.

In 2007 when Blue Rose Records introduced Americana rocker Tom Gillam to Europe with his fourth album Never Look Back, he was an unknown quantity. Since then, his status has changed drastically! Today, the multi-faceted and multi-talented Tom Gillam has become synonymous with handmade, quality Blue Rose material. Born in New Jersey and coming up through the nearby Philadelphia scene, Gillam's debut was First Of All in the late 90s, followed by Dallas (20012) and Shake My Hand (2004). A later sampler, Better Than The Rest, compiles the best of his early country/roots rock/Americana output. His stint as tour guitarist for popular songwriter Joseph Parsons piqued the Blue Rose scout's interest. Gillam's charismatic live presence laid the foundation for a long-lasting friendship and partnership with the German label. Never Look Back and the energetic live recording Play Loud … Dig Deep from 2008 led to greater popularity and a straighter rock sound in the vein of Mellencamp, Hiatt, Walsh, Seger. He pursued this course further on the next studio album Had Enough? In the meantime Gillam had relocated and found a new creative home in Austin, TX. He has been hosting a successful radio show, "The Cosmic Power Hour", for the popular KNBT channel for years. For more than two years now he has also been hosting a four-hour morning show, the "Americana Morning Show", Mondays through Fridays. He has been pursuing his musical ambitions through two channels. With Joseph Parsons, Ben Arnold, Scott Bricklin and Matt Muir he founded the popular and oft-touring US Rails. What looked at the start like a "class of Philly" reunion has established itself as a popular Blue Rose act with three studio albums between 2010 and 2013: US Rails, Southern Canon and Heartbreak Superstar. He also released some solo records like the surprisingly relaxed and mostly acoustic Rustic Beauty in early 2012 and later that same year Good For You with driving country rock, uptempo numbers and beautiful midtempo ballads.

On Beautiful Dream Tom Gillam & The Kozmic Messengers are exploring their love for the irresistible rock sound of the 70s. The ten new songs - among them a highly unusual cover version of a not-so out of the way band - are filled to the brim with passionate vocals, electric energy and the rocking, guitar-driven sound of the successful albums Never Look Back and Had Enough?. The band consists of Tom Gillam on lead vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, some piano parts but only one short slide solo. He leaves most of the slide work to the fabulous David Spencer from San Antonio who also plays lap steel and dobro, shares electric lead parts with Gillam and also acts as co-writer and singer. Dan McCann on bass is a true veteran of Texas roots rock (Evan Johns & The H-Bombs, Snake Farm, Henry Vestine, among others) and part of the rhythm section with drummer Kenn Furr. Producer/engineer Ron Flynt (20/20, Bluehearts, Drakes) adds numerous keyboard parts on piano and organ and is responsible for the analog- and great-sounding retro soundscape.

The album starts with a very rocking threesome: "Tell Me What You Want" is compact, Joe-Walsh-inspired 70s rock with slide solos and organ fills, "Just Don't Feel Like Love" with its beautiful twin guitars is not far from the later electrified Eagles or the James Gang, and "Flying Bird" is driven by Gillam's unmistakable vocals, a soulful backing choir (via Texas singer Shelley King) and great guitar duels. Providing the listener with respite is the California-tinged country rock of "Red Letter Day" with acoustic guitars, piano and lots of pedal steel. And then there's "Good Day In Hell", the rarely heard Eagles cover (from On The Border) which serves as an unintended tribute to the late Glenn Frey. The following six-minute "Lazy Sunday" is aptly titled. After an extensive intro, the band finds its course between relaxed Grateful Dead rock (circa American Beauty era) and the Dickey Betts-dominated Allman Brothers of the Brothers & Sisters phase. The mid-section's guitar improvisations have a real cosmic feel to them. "All About Me" is a no-frills, blues-based, fast & furious rocker with a surprising sax part by Steve Bernstein. "Better Days" is a convincing rock number with a funky groove. After David Spencer's short acoustic guitar interlude "DnG", the album ends with the five-minute ballad of "Sail Away", a veritable hymn in which Gillam and Spencer play acoustic guitars and trade lead vocals, delicately ornamented with electric piano, organ, piano and dobro. A real spacy ending, perfect for KNBT and "The Cosmic Power Hour".
