The Judas Tree

Mit dem Release von "The Judas Tree" hält der geschäftige Schweizer LUKE GASSER tatsächlich den vom ihm schon gewohnten Veröffentlichungs-Rhythmus von 13 bis 14 Monaten ein, er hat die Schlagzahl sogar noch erhöht und legt dieses Mal ein Album mit 18 Titeln vor. "The Judas Tree" ist ein weiteres Zeugnis für Luke Gassers schier unbändige Kreativität. Im Gegensatz zu seinem letzten Output "Mercy On Me", das von mitreißenden Rock-Krachern nur so strotzte, zeigt der auch als Autor und Filmemacher bekannte Künstler auf seinem neusten Werk sowohl seine nachdenkliche Seite, als auch, dass der Härtegrad der Musik nicht unbedingt von E-Gitarren und Verstärkern abhängig ist. "The Judas Tree" ist zwar ein von akustischen Gitarren geprägtes Album, doch wer jetzt eine Balladen-Sammlung erwartet, liegt voll daneben. Diese Scheibe ist mehr Rock`n`Roll als viele andere Genre-Veröffentlichungen, die diese Beschreibung für sich in Anspruch nehmen, denn die Rock-Musik in ihrer reinen Form ist vor allem eines: Ehrlich und handgemacht, traditionell und tiefgehend. Auf "The Judas Tree" bewegt sich Luke nahe seinen musikalischen Wurzeln; mit aussagekräftigen Texten und Rock im Herzen reflektiert er seine Erlebnisse eines turbulenten letzten Jahres, verbindet dabei gekonnt folkige Töne mit Hardrock-Gitarren und kommt zuweilen seinen Einflüssen wie The Alarm, den früheren und mittleren Rolling Stones oder in Teilen auch Bob Dylan nahe, ohne sich dabei aber als kopierender Epigone zu geben. Es ist hier vor allem diese gradlinig produzierte Musik, die wie eine unverblümt-ehrliche Aussage mitten ins Herz trifft, und die in ihrer schlichten Reinheit über mehr Größe, Poesie und Intensität verfügt als jeder Soundeffekt. Mal laut, mal leiser, aber immer mit Leib und Rocker-Seele dabei. Mit diesem Album knüpft Luke Gasser nicht nur an seinen Überraschungserfolg von 2013, an das englischsprachige Debut-Album "Retribution" an; in gewisser Weise geht Luke Gasser sogar zu seinen Anfängen als Schweizer Mundart-Rocker zurück, als er in der helvetischen Presse Mitte der 90er Jahre sogar als „Alpen-Dylan“ gefeiert wurde. Nur dass der Schweizer Musiker bei The Judas Tree noch eine fette Portion saftigen Rock’n’Roll draufgelegt hat. Mit englischen Texten diesmal und natürlich, wie gewohnt, astrein produziert. "The Judas Tree" mag für Einige eine Überraschung sein, aber bei Luke Gasser kann man sich eben nie sicher sein, was das Schweizer Energiebündel als nächstes ausbrütet. Luke macht, was er will und wofür er brennt. Und das immer wieder und vor allem aus vollem Herzen. Und verdammt gut. Eben typisch Luke Gasser.

It’s only one year since the multi-talented LUKE GASSER celebrated success in his home country with his documentary movie „Von Flüe“ and his historical novel „Und essen mag er auch nicht mehr“, right before he released his fourth english-speaking album „Mercy On Me“ in May 2017. At the moment, LUKE GASSER is preparing his new movie project, a big international production with a star cast, which will be filmed in fall 2018 and will tell a quite frivolous story from the 13th century. Despite all these projects, LUKE still took the time to accept the invitation of the legendary hard rockers Nazareth to fill the opener slot on 10 of their shows in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in December 2017. Certainly there is also new song material of LUKE GASSER, part of which he already played live on the December tour. With the release of his new album „The Judas Tree“ on May 25th, 2018, the busy Swiss artist is not only sticking to his usual release schedule of putting out a new album every 13 to 14 months; this time he has even increased the pace and comes forward with a double album containing 18 songs. “The Judas Tree“ is another proof of LUKE GASSER’s seemingly endless creativity. Contrary to his predecessor album „Mercy On Me“, which was loaden of intoxicating rock songs, the new album shows the thoughtful side of LUKE GASSER, as it also proves the fact that the degree of hardness of a rock song isn’t really dependent on electric guitars and amplifiers. Though „The Judas Tree“ is an album, which is mainly characterized by acoustic guitars, you are in for a surprise, if you expect a collection of ballads now. This album is definitely more Rock’n’Roll than many other releases in the rock music genre, because rock music in its pure form is one thing above all: honest and made by hand, traditional and profound. On this album, LUKE GASSER moves close to his musical roots; with meaningful lyrics and his heart filled with Rock, he reflects his adventures of a turbulent last year, and he skillfully melts folk music notes with hard rock guitars, once in a while getting very close to his influences like The Alarm, the early Rolling Stones and in parts Bob Dylan, without being a copycat. It is especially this straightforwardly produced music that hits you right into your heart like the unvarnished truth spoken. In its essential purety, this music has more magnitude, poetry and intensity in it than any sound effect. Sometimes loud and sometimes lower, but always with the heart and soul of a rocker. With this album, LUKE GASSER does not only follow on from the unexpected success of his english-speaking album „Retribution“ from 2013, but also he turns back to his beginnings as a Swiss dialect rock musician, who was celebrated as „Alpine Dylan“ by the Helvetian press throughout the 90’s. Only that the Swiss musician has gone the extra mile of Rock’n Roll on “The Judas Tree”, this time with English lyrics and certainly with a flawless production, as usual. For some, „The Judas Tree” might be a surprise, but one can never tell what LUKE GASSER comes up with next. LUKE, the Swiss bundle of energy, does want he wants and what he burns for. Over and over again and straight from the heart. And damn good. Typically LUKE GASSER, so to speak.
