Steady As We Go

HANK SHIZZOE ist zurück und veröffentlicht sein bemerkenswertes neues Album Steady As We Go als CD, LP und in allen digitalen Formaten. Zusammen mit seiner famosen Band wurde das Album live im Studio aufgenommen. Steady As We Go zeigt den Sänger, Gitarristen und Songwriter von seiner besten Seite. Hier erklingen Americana und Roots-Musik vom Feinsten, gespielt von einem Ensemble, das seinesgleichen sucht. Neue Songs treffen auf alte Traditionals, Lieder von Randy Newman, Washboard Sam, Tammy Wynette, Bob Nolan und eine bewegende Hommage an Tom Petty. Für das Sahnehäubchen dieser tollen Produktion sorgt das Mastering von Stephen Marcussen, der mindestens an der Hälfte unserer aller Lieblingsplatten beteiligt war.

Steady As We Go ist Hank Shizzoes 16. Album seit 1994. Da drängt sich die Frage nach der Motivation auf. Hank sagt: "Es war an der Zeit. Wir haben als Band nie besser gespielt. Ich singe diese Songs sehr gerne, meine Stimme ist auf einem ganz anderen Level. Dieses Album wollte ich seit Jahrzehnten machen. Wir haben es sehr genossen, und ich glaube, dass man das merkt."

"Wir" bedeutet in diesem Fall die Band, mit der Hank seit fünf Jahren spielt: Tom Etter an den Gitarren und Simon Baumann am Schlagzeug. Dazu kam Michel Poffet, der seinen Kontrabass 15 Jahre lang in Hanks Band zupfte, seit dem ersten Album, Low Budget. "Tom und Simon sind ein Glücksfall für mich", sagt Hank. "Es ist sehr selten, dass man mit Musikern so zusammenspielen kann. Alles klinkt sich ein, es ist ein musikalisches Daheim. Wir luden meinen lieben Freund Michel Poffet ein, und es war wie die Rückkehr eines lange verschollen geglaubten Familienmitglieds. Wir waren alle im selben Raum, spielten alles zusammen, ohne Probe, frisch. Niemand trug Kopfhörer, ich sang live. So wie man das früher machte - vier Musiker spielen gerne Musik und lassen das mit richtig guter Technik einfangen. Kein Gebastel, man kann gar nichts flicken. Einfach richtig gut gespielt und gesungen, zack, direkt ins Herz."

Steady As We Go wurde an drei Tagen im bandeigenen Studio aufgenommen. Danach gab es nur sehr wenige Overdubs (Steel Guitars und akustische Instrumente), und dann kamen die Gäste: Hendrix Ackle spielte das Piano Jahrgang 1929 von Hanks Grosseltern, Tinu Heiniger brachte seine Klarinette, Rhani Krija aus Stings Band spielte Perkussion, Shakuhachi-Meister Jürg fuyuzui Zurmühle veredelte einen Song und der grossartige Michael Flury spielte Posaune.

Von den elf Songs auf Steady As We Go sind drei neue Eigenkompositionen. "Mir war es egal, wer die Songs geschrieben hatte", sagt Hank. "Sie passen einfach gut zusammen. Ein paar dieser Songs wollte ich schon lange aufnehmen - Washboard Sams "I Been Treated Wrong", Mississippi John Hurts "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor", den alten Standard "Careless Love" in Lonnie Johnsons Arrangement, Bob Nolans "Cool Water", die uralte Ballade "On Top Of Old Smokey", die ich in Hank Williams' Version liebe. "Stand By Your Man", der Klasssiker von Tammy Wynette - da dachte ich schon lange, dass der von einem Mann gesungen werden müsste. Dazu "Days Of Heaven", ein verlorenes Kleinod von Randy Newman und Tom Pettys nahezu unbekanntes Meisterwerk "California" als perfekten Abschluss dieses Albums."

Apropos California: Das wunderbare Design stammt von Jeana Hadley, Sealevel in San Francisco. Und wer mit Hank Shizzoes Werk vertraut ist, weiß auch, dass ihm Wohlklang sehr am Herzen liegt. "Ich möchte, dass Hörerinnen und Hörer sich so fühlen, als wären sie bei uns, während wir spielen. Damit sie spüren können, wie die Musik die Luft bewegt." Stephen Marcussen masterte das Album in Hollywood. Marcussen arbeitete an mindestens der Hälfte aller unserer Lieblingsplatten. Johnny Cashs American Recordings, Tom Pettys Wildflowers, Diamonds And Pearls von Prince, zahlreiche Alben der Rolling Stones, Eels, Audioslave, Ry Cooder, k.d. lang, Willie Nelson - die Liste ist endlos. "Eine sehr gute Entscheidung", fügt Hank bei. "Stephen begriff sofort, was wir wollten. Jetzt klingt das Album genau so, wie es auch sollte."

Released on CD, LP and in all digital formats it is a remarkable achievment: Recorded live on the studio floor with his fabulous band, Steady As We Go presents a singer, songwriter and guitar player in top form. This is Americana roots music at its finest, sung and played by an ensemble of musicians whose skills and talents are second to none. New originals meet old traditionals, songs by Randy Newman, Washboard Sam, Tammy Wynette, Bob Nolan and a moving tribute to the late great Tom Petty. Topping off the finely crafted production is the mastering by Stephen Marcussen who was involved in at least half of your record collection.

Steady As We Go is Hank Shizzoe's 16th album since 1994. One might be tempted to ask, why make another one? Hank says: "Because it's time. We've never played better as a band. I felt very confident singing these songs, my voice is at an entirely different level now. I've wanted to do an album like this for decades. We've had a blast making this record and I think it shows."

"We" in this case means Hank's core band for the last five years: Tom Etter on guitars and Simon Baumann on drums. With the addition of Michel Poffet who had played his upright bass with Hank for 15 years and since the first album, Low Budget. "With Tom and Simon there is something very special and rare going on for me", Hank says. "We just click, it feels like home. So we invited my dear old friend Michel Poffet over and he came in like a long lost relative that everybody just adores. We recorded in the same room playing off of each other, unrehearsed, fresh. Nobody was wearing headphones, I sang live. The way it used to be done, really. You know, four guys doing what they love and do best, expertly captured by the finest audio equipment, no funny stuff, no fixing or tinkering. Just real good, inspired playing and singing - boom, straight to the heart."

Steady As We Go was recorded over three days at the band's own studio. Very few overdubs (steel guitars and acoustic instruments) were added before illustrous guests started arriving. Hendrix Ackle played Hank's grandparents' 1929 piano, Tinu Heiniger added clarinet, Rhani Krija from Sting's band played percussion, Shakuhachi master Jürg fuyuzui Zurmühle graced one song and the incomparable Michael Flury played trombone.

Of the eleven tracks on Steady As We Go, three are new originals. "I didn't care who the songs were written by", Hank says. "They just fit together really well. There are a handful of songs I've always wanted to record - Washboard Sam's "I Been Treated Wrong", Mississippi John Hurt's "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor", the old standard "Careless Love" in Lonnie Johnson's arrangement, Bob Nolan's "Cool Water" and the ancient ballad "On Top Of Old Smokey" that I love in Hank Williams' interpretation. "Stand By Your Man", the classic Tammy Wynette song - I've been thinking for a long time that this should really be sung by a man. Then there is "Days Of Heaven", a lost gem by Randy Newman. Tom Petty's "California" is an overlooked masterpiece and a perfect closer for this album."

Speaking of California: The beautiful artwork and typography was created by Jeana Hadley at Sealevel in San Francisco. And those who follow Hank Shizzoe's production work know that the listener's pleasure has always been very important to his approach: "I want you to feel as if you were right there with us, feel the air being moved." A decision was made to hand over the mastering process to none other than Stephen Marcussen in Hollywood. Marcussen has mastered at least half of everybody's favorite records - from Johnny Cash's American Recordings, Tom Petty's Wildflowers to Prince's Diamonds And Pearls, various releases by The Rolling Stones, Eels, Audioslave, Ry Cooder, k.d. lang, Willie Nelson and hundreds more. "The perfect decision", Hank adds, "Stephen got what we were doing and made this album sound the way it was meant to sound."
