Hey Love

TODD THIBAUD gehört zu jenen verlässlichen Typen, die sich musikalisch immer treu geblieben sind. Größere Veränderungen sind nicht sein Ding, die Abwechslung liegt in den Nuancen von Arrangement und Produktion, Spannung wird durch eine hohe Qualität der Songs garantiert, mit seiner attraktiven, gefühlvollen, sämig-rauen Stimme versprüht er ohnehin eine vertraute Wohlfühlatmosphäre wie kein Zweiter! Das war schon so zu Zeiten seiner ersten Band, den Courage Brothers, Anfang bis Mitte der 90er. Mit dem 97er Solodebüt Favorite Waste Of Time setzte sich der Mann aus Vermont ein erstes Denkmal am Songschreiber/Popfirmament. Es folgten die klassischen Blue Rose-Studioproduktionen Little Mystery (1999), Squash (2000), Northern Skies (2004), Broken (2008), Waterfall (2013) und Hill West (2019).
KIM TAYLOR ist eine amerikanische Singer-Songwriterin. Sie hat fünf Alben veröffentlicht und ist mit zahlreichen bekannten Künstlern wie Kasey Chambers, Ron Sexsmith, Grace Potter und Over the Rhine getourt. Ihre Songs wurden in zahlreichen US-TV-Shows gespielt wie etwa Flashpoint, Army Wives, Smallville, Cyberbully, One Tree Hill sowie in dem Comedy-Drama aus Großbritannien, Stella.

Thibaud und Taylor wurden einige Jahre lang vom gleichen Management betreut. Dessen Idee war es, dass beide Musiker versuchen sollten, gemeinsam Songs zu schreiben, um damit das Interesse von Labels zu wecken. Beide trafen sich vor einigen Jahren in Austin beim SXSW-Festival, woraus sich schnell eine Freundschaft entwickelte.
Während sie in Austin waren, schmiedeten sie Pläne, sich in Boston zu treffen, um zusammen Songs zu schreiben. Zwar trafen sie sich dort, doch ein Song entstand leider nicht. Allerdings stellten sie fest, dass sie viel Freude hatten, zusammen zu singen, und die Idee für dieses Projekt entstand aus diesem Treffen. Sie sprachen darüber, dass es doch sehr interessant wäre, diese Zusammenarbeit auf die schönen und auch nicht so schönen Zeiten von Beziehungen und Ehen zu konzentrieren. Beide waren damals zu beschäftigt mit eigenen Projekten, beschlossen aber, in Kontakt zu bleiben und die Zusammenarbeit anzugehen, sobald es die Zeit erlaubt. Nachdem einige Jahre vergangen waren, ohne dass etwas geschehen war, nahm Taylor die Sache in die Hand und gab den Anstoß zu dem, was WATER AND SAND werden sollte. „Wir hatten Probleme, einen Namen für unser Projekt zu finden, tauschten Ideen aus, aber nichts davon wusste uns zu begeistern,“ erinnert sich Thibaud. „Zu der Zeit schrieben wir beide Songs für unsere kommenden Alben und Kim schickte mir einen Song mit dem Titel ‚Water And Sand‘. Ich liebte den Song vom ersten Moment an und nach einigen Diskussionen kamen wir zum Entschluss, dass dieser Name sich sehr gut für unser Projekt eignen würde. Wir brachten den Namen zu unserem Manager und zu Freunden und Familien und allen gefiel der Name. Ich denke, er bezieht sich auf die Ausgewogenheit, die dem Leben und uns abverlangt. Die zwei Seiten der Münze. Das Yin und Yang. Das Leben, das uns auf der einen Seite Wasser und auf der anderen Seite den groben Sand gibt. Es gibt viele Freuden und gute Zeiten in unserem Leben, aber natürlich auch Zeiten der Unruhe und Schmerzen. Ich denke, der Name zeigt die zweideutigen Erfahrungen sehr deutlich.“

Verglichen mit den eigenen Veröffentlichungen ist WATER AND SAND anders. „Wir beide wollten unsere Stimmen und das gemeinsame harmonische Singen in den Vordergrund bringen und drum herum den Rest setzen. Wir setzten nie feste Regeln, was die andere Instrumentierung betrifft. Wir versuchten immer nur das zu machen, was richtig für die Songs ist und die Stimmen nicht zu sehr in den Hintergrund zu bringen.“

Wie schon bei den Vorgängeralben Water And Sand (2018) und Catching Light (2020) legten Thibaud und Taylor das Hauptaugenmerk beim Schreiben auf Beziehungen. Diese Gewichtung besteht auch beim neuen Album Hey Love, aber sie haben auch die Tür für andere Themen geöffnet. Beide Musiker sind seit vielen Jahren verheiratet und haben mit ihren Partnern langjährige Beziehungen. „Jeder, der eine langjährige Beziehung hat, versteht, dass das Leben in einer Beziehung nicht immer einfach ist. Wir alle ändern uns und wachsen. Wir alle streiten und gedeihen. Finden einen Weg, um zusammenzubleiben und alle Herausforderungen zu meistern, die uns das Leben bereitet. Dieses Thema zieht sich wie ein Faden wie bereits bei den anderen Alben auch durch das neue.“ Die Songs auf Hey Love wurden in Watertown, Massachusetts, aufgenommen und von Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter) co-produziert. Sie spiegeln die entscheidenden Veränderungen im Leben der Bandmitglieder in den letzten Jahren wider, darunter den Verlust von Zuhause, Arbeit und Familie.

Der Kern von WATER AND SAND sind Thibaud und Taylor, aber die Alben und Tourneen wären unmöglich ohne die Hilfe von Thomas Juliano und Sean Staples, die beide sehr engagierte und wichtige Teile dieses Projekts wurden. „Ihre Beiträge bei den Aufnahmen und den Live-Shows sind extrem wichtig“, bekräftigt Thibaud.

TODD THIBAUD is a consistently convincing, reliable artist who always stays true to his musical vision. He does not change things up dramatically but finds variety in nuances of arrangement and production. After all, the consistently high quality of his songs and his mellifluous, warm voice create an irresistible and familiar atmosphere. This was already true of his first band, The Courage Brothers, in the early to mid-90s. With his 1997 solo debut Favorite Waste Of Time, the man from Vermont made his first mark on the songwriter/pop canopy. It was followed by a slew of classic Blue Rose studio albums Little Mystery (1999), Squash (2000), Northern Skies (2004), Broken (2008), Waterfall (2013), and Hill West (2019).
KIM TAYLOR is an American singer-songwriter. She has released 5 full-length records and toured with numerous notable acts including Kasey Chambers, Ron Sexsmith, Grace Potter and Over the Rhine. In 2013, Taylor starred in the Sundance and Berlinale selected Indie film, I Used To Be Darker. Her fifth full-length record, Songs of Instruction, is a 10 song collection of her signature intimate folksy narrative songwriting style.

For several years Thibaud and Taylor had the same management. Their idea was that both musicians should try writing songs together that the management could then submit to their contacts. Both finally met each other in person at SXSW several years ago and struck up a friendship.
While they were at SXSW, they made plans to get together for a writing session the next time Kim traveled to Boston from her home in Ohio. When she was in Boston they met up and actually had no luck that day writing a song, but discovered that they really liked singing together. The idea for a collaboration project came from that meeting. They talked about how interesting it would be to focus the songwriting for their collaboration on the struggles and joys of relationships/marriage etc. Both of them were busy with their own projects at the time, but they agreed to stay in touch and make this happen as soon as the time was right. After a few years had gone by without any progress, it was Taylor who took the initiative and got the ball rolling for what would become WATER AND SAND.
„We struggled coming up with a name for our project, sending each other lists of potential options, but nothing seemed to really resonate“, Thibaud recalls. „Both of us were in the process of writing songs at that time for our forthcoming album, and Kim sent me one of her new ones called ‚Water and Sand‘. I loved the song as soon as I heard it, and as the two of us discussed it, I think we both agreed that it would actually make a good band name for our project. We ran it by our management and some trusted friends/family, and everyone seemed to like it. I think for us the name relates to the balances that life imposes and requires of us. The two sides of the coin. The Yin and Yang. The life giving water and the gritty, abrasive sand. There are many joys and good times in our lives, but of course, there are also times of struggle and pain. I think the name points to those co-existing experiences.“

Compared to their own releases, WATER AND SAND is different. „We both wanted to center the project around two vocals, singing together, in harmony, and build things from there; always keeping those elements front and center. We never made any hard and fast rules in regard to other instrumentation. We’ve just always tried to do what’s right for the songs, and not overshadow the vocals too much.“
Like on their previous albums Water And Sand (2018) and Catching Light (2019), Thibaud and Taylor focused much of their writing on relationships. That focus still exists for them on the new album Hey Love, but they have opened the door to other subjects as well. Taylor and Thibaud both have long standing marriages and have been with their spouses for many years. Thibaud: „Anyone who has shared a relationship with someone over a long period of time understands that it’s not always simple. We all change and grow. We all struggle and thrive. Finding a way to stick together through all of the challenges that life presents to us is a topic that we both investigate throughout the new album.“
Recorded in Watertown, Massachusetts and co-produced by Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter), the songs on Hey Love reflect pivotal changes in the lives of the band members over the last several years including loss of home, work, and family.

WATER AND SAND is Thibaud and Taylor at its core but the albums and tours they do won’t be possible without the help of Thomas Juliano and Sean Staples who have both become very dedicated and important pieces of the project. Juliano and Staples bring the project to another level. „Their contributions to our recordings and live shows are extremely important“, Thibaud points out.
