Donlands

Leger ist ein Favorit des Uncut Magazins und des Rolling Stone Deutschland und wurde auch von seinen Künstlerkollegen Ron Sexsmith und Doug Paisley gelobt.
Auf seinem neuen Album „Donlands“ hat Leger einen anderen Ansatz gewählt und sich mit dem legendären kanadischen Produzenten/Ingenieur Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Neil Young) zusammengetan, dessen charakteristischer atmosphärischer Sound dem Anspruch von Leger eine völlig neue Dimension verleiht. Benannt nach der Straße im östlichen Teil Torontos, in der die Aufnahme stattfand, in dem ehemaligen Donlands Theatre, präsentiert „Donlands“ Jerry Leger, wie man ihn noch nie zuvor gehört hat.
„Nicht mehr viele Leute machen Platten wie Mark Howard“, sagt Leger. „Nachdem ich ihm erzählt hatte, wie viel Tom Waits‘ ‚Real Gone‘ mir bedeutete, war ich sofort begeistert. Wie alle meine Alben haben wir ‚Donlands‘ größtenteils live im Studio mit meiner Band The Situation [Dan Mock] aufgenommen , Kyle Sullivan, Alan Zemaitis] im Kreis – keine Kopfhörer, nur zuhören und existieren, atmen als Ganzes. Für mich ist es eine Platte, die in ihrer eigenen Welt lebt.“
„Donlands“ findet seinen angemessenen Abschluss mit „Slow Night In Nowhere Town“, in dem der Film endet und wir das Kino in einem stetigen Regenguss verlassen, unsicher, ob wir nach Hause gehen oder einfach weitermachen sollen. Mit „Donlands“ hat er ein Album gemacht, das als einer der Höhepunkte in einem ohnehin schon gewaltigen Werk gilt.

On his new album 'Donlands', Leger has taken a different approach, teaming up with legendary Canadian producer/engineer Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Neil Young), whose trademark atmospheric sound adds an entirely new dimension to Leger's approach. Named after the street in Toronto's east end where it was recorded, in what once was the Donlands Theatre, 'Donlands' presents Jerry Leger as he's never been heard before.
"Not a lot of people make records like Mark Howard anymore," Leger says. "After I got to tell him how much Tom Waits' 'Real Gone' meant to me, I fell right into the experience. Like all my albums, we recorded 'Donlands' mostly live in the studio with my band The Situation [Dan Mock, Kyle Sullivan, Alan Zemaitis] in a circle--no headphones, just listening and existing, breathing as a whole. To me, it's a record that lives in its own world."
'Donlands' comes to an appropriate close with "Slow Night In Nowhere Town," in which the movie ends and we walk out of the theatre into a steady downpour, unsure of whether to go home or just keep moving. With 'Donlands', he has made an album that stands as one of the peak moments in an already towering body of work.
