Eigentlich ist es nicht verständlich, warum es bisher noch nie ein Album von Alejandro Escovedo auf ein europäisches, geschweige denn deutsches Label geschafft hat. Gehört er doch bereits seit vielen Jahren zu den kreativsten und musikalisch innovativsten Songwritern in Austin, Texas. Am neuen Album A Man Under The Influence konnte man dann unmöglich dran vorbei gehen. Nachdem schon der Vorgänger Bourbonitis Blues ein sehr gutes Album gewesen war, legt Escovedo beim neuen Album noch einen drauf. Der "Hofdichter" Austins durchstreift die Welt der Verluste, der Sehnsüchte und des Bedauerns und kreierte 11 Songs, die man nicht so schnell vergisst. Produziert von Chris Stamey (früher einmal mit Peter Holsapple bei den dB's) und unter der Mithilfe jeder Menge Freunde (Hector Munoz an Schlagzeug und Percussion, Brian Standefer am Cello, Eric Heywood (Son Volt, Freakwater, Richard Buckner) an der Pedal Steel, Cornbread am Bass, und - zurück für einen speziellen Auftritt - sein langjähriger Gitarrist Joe Eddy Hines) entstand ohne Zweifel ein Meisterwerk. Mutig und schwungvoll. Das Sahnehäubchen allerdings ist die Mitwirkung von Musikern wie Mitch Easter, Mac McCaughan und Jon Wurster (Superchunk), Ryan Adams und Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown), Chip Robinson (The Backsliders, Tonya Lamm (Hazeldine) und Lynn Blakey (Glory Fountain).

Alejandro Escovedos Stammbaum enthält den ehemaligen Santana-Percussionisten Pete Escovedo und Pete's Tochter, Sheila E (Schlagzeugerin bei Prince und später ein Popstar). Er begann seine musikalische Karriere mit The Nuns, einer Mid-70er Jahre Punkband aus San Francisco. Er war 1979 Mitbegründer der Cowpunk-Band Rank and File, die nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in New York nach Austin, TX zog. Die Band veröffentlichte das Album "Sundown" auf Slash Records. Kurz danach verließ Escovedo die Band und formierte zusammen mit seinem Bruder Javier die True Believers. Die Band nahm zwei Alben für die EMI auf (wobei das zweite nie veröffentlicht wurde, was auch ausschlaggebend zur Auflösung 1988 war) und tourte durch das Land, oftmals im Vorprogramm von den Los Lobos. 1992 veröffentlichte Escovedo ein Soloalbum auf Watermelon Records, Gravity, das die Vielfalt seiner Stile vereinte. Das Album war produziert von Stephen Bruton. Nach dem 96er-Album With These Hands begann er auch, mit der Band Buick MacKane Aufnahmen zu machen. 1999 folgte mit Bourbonitis Blues sein bisher letztes Album, das sowohl eigene Stücke als auch Coverversionen enthielt.

Wir denken, A Man Under The Influence ist das Album seiner Karriere. Diese elf Songs haben den Schwung des Orchestralen und etwas stolzierendes, glänzendes. Sie rocken wie wild und reißen dir dein Herz heraus. Dies ist, gerade deshalb, ein Alejandro Escovedo album.

Also sweetening ist sounds is an array of accomplished musical friends like Mitch Easter, Mac McCaughan and Jon Wurster (Superchunk), Ryan Adams, Chip Robinson (The Backsliders), Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown), Tonya Lamm (Hazeldine), and Lynn Blakey (Glory Fountain). The album's first two tracks "Wave" and "Rosalie" inspired Alejandro to (co-)write a play. "By The Hand of the Father," which has already premiered in LA and will make ist Austin debut as SXSW 2001. The play is a moving chronicle of the lives and times of his jamily members move from Mexico to the US. Alejandro also plans an acoustic tour backing author Larry Brown during readings from his new book, Billy Ray's Farm. A Man Under The Influence is Alejandro's first studio record in six years, and his first album for Blue Rose. We think it's the album of his career. These eleven songs have the sweep ot the orchestral and the swagger of glam; they rock like sex and will rip your heart out. This is, after all, an Alejandro Escovedo album.
