In kürzester Zeit hat es der New Yorker Musiker ISRAEL NASH GRIPKA geschafft, sich in der Gunst der globalen Americana-Gemeinde mit einigen wirklich überzeugenden Veröffentlichungen und unermüdlichem Live-Einsatz ganz weit nach vorne zu katapultieren! Bei den einschlägigen Festivals in den Niederlanden ist er bereits ein gern gesehener Gast mit deutlichem Wiedererkennungswert, in Schweden tourte er kürzlich genauso wie zuvor in Belgien und Großbritannien, bei uns gibt es diesbezüglich noch beträchtlichen Nachholbedarf. Auf jeden Fall gilt es, die Entwicklung dieses hochtalentierten Künstlers nicht zu verpassen! Deshalb bringt Blue Rose jetzt parallel seine Alben #2 und #3 heraus. Es handelt sich dabei um das jüngste Studiowerk Barn Doors And Concrete Floors und - quasi als Pendant - die Live-Scheibe 2011 Barn Doors Spring Tour, Live In Holland im Paket mit einer Bonus-DVD.

Noch vor wenigen Jahren war der Name Israel Nash Gripka innerhalb der internationalen Roots-Szene völlig unbekannt. Praktisch aus dem Nichts startete er in 2009 mit der Debütplatte New York Town, einem noch etwas unebenen, aber in großen Teilen schon recht vielversprechenden ersten Ausrufezeichen in die Welt. Kräftiges Songwriting und spannende Arrangements waren genauso zu erkennen wie eine intelligente Instrumentierung mit einer cleveren Balance von akustischen und elektrischen Instrumenten, mit mal mehr, mal weniger Rock-Elementen, schöne Poesie im Wertewiderspruch von Big City und dem Landleben seiner eigenen Jugend. Denn der aktuelle Großstädter stammt als Sohn eines Baptistenpredigers aus den Ozarks im ruralen Missouri, was man der Musik des Endzwanzigers auch jederzeit anhört. Den Moloch von Brooklyn begreift er als kulturelle Aufgabe und als Hilfestellung für sein musikalisches Weiterkommen - nur auszuhalten, weil er eh ständig unterwegs ist. Insgeheim liebäugelt er mit dem erneuten Rückzug in den Süden, von Austin, Texas war zuletzt die Rede.

Für die Produktion seines zweiten Albums Barn Doors And Concrete Floors hat er die Bedürfnisse nach Ruhe und Entschleunigung schon mal radikal umgesetzt. So fanden die Aufnahmen in den Catskill Mountains in einer Scheune statt, die Gripka extra zu einem Tonstudio umbauen ließ. Insgesamt bedeutet dieses Werk eine ganz dicke Weiterentwicklung in allen Belangen! Süffige Midtempo Rocker in satter semiakustisch-elektrischer Instrumentierung, nachdenkliche Americana Songs in herzenswarmer Harmonica/Guitar Strumming-Lagerfeuer-Atmosphäre, relaxter Roadhouse Country Rock, Backporch Songs mit Banjo, Mandoline und Geige über elektrischen Gitarren... Israel Nash Gripka hat da wirklich eine unerhört attraktive Musik gekoppelt, die mal an John Fogerty (Stimme) oder Ryan Adams (Stimmung) erinnert, den guten alten Neil Young zitiert, an bessere Zeiten von Jay Farrar gemahnt und sowieso durchweg mächtig Stones/Burritos-infiltriert daherkommt (man denke nur an 'Wild Horses', 'No Expectations'...). Als Helfer hat er eine in der Tat auf den ersten Blick ziemlich verrückte Crew verpflichtet, die am Ende irgendwie wundersam zusammen harmoniert: Produzent ist Steve Shelley von Sonic Youth, der hier auch Schlagzeug spielt. Als Recording Engineer fungiert Ted Young, der jüngst mit Gaslight Anthem und Kurt Vile gearbeitet hat. Electric Lead, Slide und Resonator Guitars spielt Jason McClellan (Midlake), Bass sein Bruder Aaron McClellan, Brendon Anthony (Walt Wilkins, Pat Green, Cory Morrow) aus Texas ist für viele spezielle Instrumentalbeiträge an Banjo, Mandoline und Fiddle verantwortlich, Keyboarder Jason Crosby (Solar Circus, God Street Wine, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph) stammt eher aus der NYer Jam Band/Roots Rock-Ecke, Pedal Steeler Rich Hinman (Nels Andrews, Matt Keating, Ben Kweller) und Eric Swanson (Bass, auch Banjo oder Mandoline) stehen für Alt.Country Rock. Sie alle scheinen geradezu beseelt von dieser magischen Studiofarm und motiviert durch die Qualität von Songs wie 'Fool's Gold', 'Drown', 'Sunset, Regret', 'Four Winds', 'Red Dress', 'Antebellum'... Und angezogen vom Charisma des Protagonisten! So sind die 11 komplett selbstgeschriebenen Songs nichts weniger als die perfekte Hochzeit von Folk und Rock, Country und Blues, Songwriter und Gospel, 70er Jahre-Stil und No Depression geworden!

Mit den herausragenden neuen Songs von Barn Doors And Concrete Floors als Fundament war Israel Nash Gripka im Frühjahr 2011 erneut unterwegs bei unseren Nachbarn. U.a. avancierte er beim kultigen Blue Highways Festival in Utrecht zum umjubelten Star! Die nun bei Blue Rose erschienene CD 2011 Barn Doors Spring Tour, Live In Holland enthält Mitschnitte eines vergleichbaren Konzerts im Mr.Frits in Eindhoven zwei Tage später am 25.04.2011. Gripka stand mitten auf der Bühne wie ein Fels in der Brandung, um ihn herum eine zum kräftigen, lauten Rocken höchst motivierte Truppe von fünf Kids, von denen einige aussahen, als ob sie zuhause noch nicht mal in Bars rein dürften. Und dann zog eine einzige gut einstündige Americana Rock-Breitseite, nur ein paar Mal unterbrochen von nicht minder deftigen Rock-Balladen, über das begeisterte Publikum: vier Gitarren (ING mit Akustischer und drei elektrische Gitarristen, wenn man die Electric Mandolin von Eric Swanson dazu zählt, die er auch genauso gespielt hat), Bass und Drums, dazu die markigen Vocals und etwas Harmonica des Meisters. Urgewaltig und total überzeugend! Sieben Stücke stammen von der aktuellen Studio-CD, drei vom Debüt New York Town und zum Abschluss kommt eine furios fetzende, polternde Fassung vom 'Revolution Blues' von Neil Young. In just a short amount of time New York musician ISRAEL NASH GRIPKA has won over the global Americana-listening community with some truly great albums and incessant touring. He has become a favorite guest with high recognition value at the relevant Dutch festivals, he has toured Sweden, Belgium and Great Britain - it's time he caught up with Germany. And it's Germany's chance to catch up with this highly talented artist's development - that's why Blue Rose are releasing his 2nd and 3rd album simultaneously, the studio album Barn Doors And Concrete Floors and the following live record 2011 Barn Doors Spring Tour, Live In Holland which comes in a special edition with DVD.

A few years ago, Israel Nash Gripka was not a household name on the roots scene, in fact, he was totally unknown in Europe. His 2009 debut album New York Town, a slightly uneven but promising affair, brought him into the Americana world. Strong songwriting, interesting arrangements with a nice balance of acoustic and electric instruments, rock and folk elements, and interesting lyrics caught between his rural youth and the lure of the big city. Currently living in NYC, Gripka - the son of a baptist preacher - grew up in the Ozarks in rural Missouri - a fact you can hear in his songs. Brooklyn, to him, is a cultural challenge but a good platform for his career, only tolerable because he is on tour most of the time anyway. Secretly, he fancies a move back to the South, possibly to Austin, TX.

For his second album Barn Doors And Concrete Floors, he implemented his principles of calm and deceleration by turning a barn in the Catskills into a recording studio. And the result is a huge step forward in every respect! Driving midtempo rockers in a semi-acoustic/electric setting, thoughtful Americana with a heartwarming backporch atmosphere, relaxed roadhouse-style country rock, songs with banjo, mandolin, fiddle and electric guitars ... Israel Nash Gripka has created an amazingly appealing album, at times reminiscent of John Fogerty (vocals) or Ryan Adams (atmosphere) or Jay Farrar in his salad days, at other times drawing from Neil Young while always heavily influenced by the Stones (think "Wild Horses", "No Expectations").

The group of helping hands Gripka has assembled seems rather incongruous at first glance but they came up with a wonderfully harmonius end result: Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth is the album's producer and drummer. Ted Young who recently worked with Gaslight Anthem and Kurt Vile functions as recording engineer. Electric lead, slide & resonator guitars are provided by Jason McClellan (Midlake), his brother Aaron is on bass, Brendan Anthony from Texas provides banjo, mandolin and fiddle. Keyboarder Jason Crosby (Solar Circus, God Street Wine, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph) is a member of the New York jam band scene while pedal steeler Rich Hinman (Nels Andrews, Matt Keating, Ben Kweller) and Eric Swanson (bass, banjo, mandolin) are rooted in alt.country. All of them sound highly motivated by this magic farm studio and the quality of songs like 'Fool's Gold', 'Drown', 'Sunset, Regret', 'Four Winds', 'Red Dress', 'Antebellum'... and of course by the protagonist's charisma. These eleven self-penned songs are nothing less than a perfect marriage of folk and rock, country and blues, songwriter and gospel, 70ies-style and No Depression.

To present the excellent songs of Barn Doors And Concrete Floors, Israel Nash Gripka toured the Netherlands in the spring of 2011 - and became the Blue Highways festival's big attraction! The new CD 2011 Barn Doors Spring Tour, Live In Holland features recordings from a concert at Mr.Frits in Eindhoven, two days later on April 25, 2011. Gripka stood center stage like a rock in the middle of a five-piece band with members that looked like they might be too young to even get served in a bar back home. At any rate, they poured a one-hour-plus Americana-rock hour with a few powerful ballads over the audience: four guitars (ING playing acoustic plus three electric guitarists if you count Eric Swanson's electric mandolin), bass & drums, and the band leader's distinctive vocals and some harmonica. A powerful, utterly convinincing, force of nature! Seven songs from the current studio album, three from New York Town and in closing a raucous version of "Revolution Blues" by Neil Young. Who else would they cover?

The limited edition comes with a bonus DVD featuring the "Making Of Barn Doors …" documentary - turning the barn into a studio in the midst of the beautiful Catskill mountains, band rehearsals, interviews, music, etc. A great bonus!
