WHITEHORSE

WHITEHORSE

Whitehorse!

Mit The Fate Of The World... ist Whitehorse nun die direkte Weiterentwicklung gelungen! Danach erinnert 'Peterbilt Coalmine' an seligste Neil Young & Nicolette Larson-Zeiten.

Auf mehr, auf The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss. Keine Frage: Dieses Album wird eine ganz große Erfolgsstory!!

WHITEHORSE are a fresh new band with two well-known names: Canadian indie roots/rock musician & singer-songwriter Luke Doucet and his wife Melissa McClelland. With both their many individual activities they've hardly had time to spend quality time together. So they came up with a plan and founded a band named Whitehorse. This happened in 2011 and led to plenty of gigs (even in Europe) and a short self-titled 8-song mini album. This could've been enough - after all working with your spouse isn't always easy. But Doucet & McClelland seem to like it just fine and are now delivering The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss, their second, dramatically titled album. It's a full-length record with twelve excellent songs and a running time of 47 minutes.

Luke Doucet is probably the greatest allround talent on the current Canadian scene, a true CanAmericana maestro as singer, songwriter, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and producer. 20 years ago - when he was 19 - he played guitar for the great folk-pop chanteuse Sarah McLachlan. You'll find his name in the fine print of albums by McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Carolyn Mark, Captain Tractor, Oh Susanna, NQ Arbuckle, Dustin Bentall and Kathleen Edwards - he's also a member of the Blue Rodeo family. On his own records he offers a wide palette from guitar rock to cool indie pop, from CanAmericana folk to 60ies garage punk and alt. country rock. He's not only an excellent guitarist (electric, acoustic, slide, pedal & lap steel) but also well-versed on bass, drums, percussion, banjo, keyboards, harmonica and all of this in various musical styles. At heart he's a singer-songwriter but there's plenty of pop in his melodies and arrangements, and alt. prairie rock in instrumentation and aesthetics. At the start of his professional career there was the guitar/punk/garage rock trio Veal with three releases Hot Loser/96, Tilt O'Whirl/99, The Embattled Hearts/03). Since 2001 he has released three solo albums Aloha Manitoba/01, Outlaws/04, Broken (And Other Rogue States)/05, Blood's Too Rich/08 and Steel City Trawler/10, the last two as Luke Doucet & White Falcon (which featured Melissa McClelland).

Melissa McClelland has a good deal more to offer than the harmony vocals she contributes to her husband's albums and studio recordings for Justin Rutledge, NQ Arbuckle, Jim Cuddy or Blue Rodeo. She demonstrates her versatility and talent with her contributions to the White Falcons live set and her four solo releases Melissa McClelland/01, Stranded In Suburbia/04, Thumbelina's One Night Stand/06 and Victoria Day/09. Her original songs (like the best-known 'Passenger 24') are full of energy, moving stories, atmosphere and strong vocals with a stylistic scope ranging from grand pop gestures to down-to-Earth roots rock. Stylistically and vocally she is working in the vicinity of Aimee Mann, Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, Amy Rigby and Neko Case. Luke Doucet produced and played an integral part in all of her albums after the early solo debut.

They got to know one another on the 2004 sessions, became a couple as members of Sarah McLachlan's band and got married in 2006. And now they're forming a musical bond in Whitehorse. A two-member band? Sure, it could've been easier ("Luke & Melissa") but then their output would have been compared to their solo releases. Whitehorse, however, is a brand new endeavour. For the first time, Doucet & McClelland work as a team of equals, composing, arranging, singing and performing together. On stage, they work as a duo on multiple instruments. For the 2011 mini album Whitehorse they wrote five new songs and completely rearranged two that had been previously released ('Broken', 'Passenger 24'). The result is an adventurous mix of spooky folk, garage-y rock, atmospheric, almost-ambient CanAmericana songs, short, soundtrack-like soundscapes and heavy, dark alt.roots rock. And in-between all this, there's a beautifully casual version of Springsteen's 'I'm On Fire'.

The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss now shows a clear development. They co-wrote ten brand-new songs and dusted off two of Doucet's older compositions (Veal's 'Mexico Texaco' and 'Annie Lu'). The collection has - though genre-hopping, creativity and risk-taking are not abandoned - a more cohesive feel and flow. ,Achilles' Desire' is the perfect opener, dominated by Doucet's Gretsch guitar's harsh & twangy sounds and an intense, spooky atmosphere with a rudimentary rhythmic foundation of handclaps and tambourine, it leads into a melodic break with beautiful vocal harmonies - a great introduction to the Whitehorse universe. ,Devil's Got A Gun' is an alt.folk rock number with a Tom Petty chorus and spaghetti western guitar. ,Mismatched Eyes (Boat Song)' starts out as a beautiful, sparse acoustic love song with romantic harmonies before Doucet's powerful electric guitar enters the song with a different type of energy. It is followed by ,Peterbilt Coalmine' which is reminiscent of the best times of Neil Young & Nicolette Larson. The soft, whispery ,Cold July', the computer beat-enhanced stomper ,Jane' and the deceptively simple, folk-meets-power-pop ,Out Like A Lion' offer McClelland an opportunity to show three very differents facets of her artistry. ,No Glamour In The Hammer' describes the dreariness of their hometown Hamilton, Ontario with tongue in cheek - many years ago the couple moved from the too-trendy metropolis of Toronto to the "steel city". With ,Radiator Blues' and ,Annie Lu' Whitehorse move on to swampy, pulsating, unsettling alternative roots rock before ,Wisconsin' with its clever wordplay takes their listeners to a Calexico & rock inspired desert country. In keeping with this soundscape, album closer ,Mexico Texaco' takes its sweet slow motion time to grow into an exquisite 6-minute road movie/killer ballad drenched in pedal steel.

In Whitehorse Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland are treading an entirely new path without abandoning their past experiences. They've mobilized and merged their fan base, constantly sell-out their live shows and have created great anticipation with their debut EP. The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss satisfies this desire and will without question be a great success!
