The Whole Enchilada - The History of Desert Rock 1976-1994

Von Rich Hopkins, dem Mitbegründer und Gitarristen der Sidewinders/Sand Rubies, stammt die Idee des 3-LP-Multimedia-Sets The Whole Enchilada – The History of Desert Rock 1976-1994. Auf diesem voluminösen Set, veröffentlicht auf Hopkins‘ Label San Jacinto Records, ist das Who’s Who von Tucson’s musikalischen Aushängeschildern vertreten und solche, die sträflich übersehen worden waren.
Die in mühevoller Kleinarbeit gewissenhaft zusammengestellte Kollektion ist ein umfangreicher musikalischer Familienstammbaum von Tucson, beginnend bei den Mid-70ern bis hin zu den Mid-90ern, von der einfältigen Bob Meighan Band und dem Honky Tonk der Dusty Chaps (die beide in den 1970er Jahren bei Major-Labels untergekommen waren) bis hin zu den internationalen Indie-Giganten Green On Red (Serfers), Howe Gelb und Giant Sandworms, Naked Prey, Al Perry und The Cattle, Desert Rock-Krachern The Sidewinders, Yard Trauma, Black Sun Ensemble und vielen anderen. Mit den unterschiedlichsten Stilen, die Honky Tonk, Power Pop, Country und Cow Punk, Fusion, Punk Rock, Bluegrass, Blues und geradlinigen Rock’n’Roll abdecken, glänzt das Album mit vielen vergnüglichen Überraschungen (wie etwa dem unbeachteten großartigen Countrysänger Ned Sutton), für Sammler interessanten Raritäten, populären Stücken sowie wichtigen Beiträgen, von denen man sich fragt, wie man die übersehen konnte.
Dem 3-LP-Set beigehörig ist ein 70-Seiten-Buch mit seltenen Fotos, obskuren Geschichten und Anekdoten sowie dutzenden biografischen Essays von vielen der vertretenen Künstlern selbst und anderen bekannten Autoren, Journalisten, Fotografen und DJs, die den Leser in die glücklichen Tage des Desert Rock versetzen. Das Werk wurde von den Tucson-Einheimischen Brian Jabas Smith und Douglas „Fini“ Finical zusammengestellt. Zusätzlich enthält das Set einen Code, der den Fans erlaubt, die 30-Minuten-Dokumentation „Whole Enchilada“ anzusehen, in der einige Stars der Zeit oder solche, die es gewesen sein könnten oder sollten, zu Wort kommen, geleitet von der mit Filmpreisen ausgezeichneten Regisseurin Maggie Smith.

This whopping three-LP multi-media set, a who’s-who anthology of Tucson’s musical trailblazers and its woefully overlooked, arrives March 15, 2022 on Tucson’s own San Jacinto label.
The painstakingly compiled collection is a veritable Tucson musical family tree, leading us from from the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s, from the swoony Bob Meighan Band and the honky tonk of the Dusty Chaps (both whom signed to major labels in the 1970’s) to international indie giants Green On Red (Serfers), Howe Gelb and Giant Sandworms, Naked Prey, Al Perry and The Cattle, Desert Rock breakouts The Sidewinders, Yard Trauma, Black Sun Ensemble and many more. With varying styles covering honky tonk, power-pop, country and cow-punk, fusion, punk rock, eclectic and art-damaged, amped up bluegrass, blues and straight up sunbaked rock‘n’roll, the album is full of pleasant surpirses (unsung country great Ned Sutton, for example), collectible rarities, popular numbers and outright gems you’ll wonder how you ever missed.
Accompanying the three-record set is a 70-page companion book with rare photos, obscure histories and anecdotes, and dozens of biographical essays by many of the artists themselves and others by named writers, journalists, photographers and deejays, placing the reader centerstage at Desert Rock’s halcyon days. The e¬ort was compiled by Tucson natives Brian Jabas Smith and Douglas “Fini” Finical. In addition, the set includes a code that allows fans to view the 30-minute Whole Enchilada documentary, featuring a handful of stars and coulda-shouldas included in the project, helmed by film-fest winning director Maggie Smith.
One listen will recall for those familiar with the era and area the tangy scent of monsoon-drenched mesquite trees, the dark, top-down drives to Mexico, the murky interiors of neglected old-man-bars-turned-music-venues and all their jovial inmates. Proceeds from THE WHOLE ENCHILADA benefit Tucson’s Casa Maria Soup Kitchen.
